Disney and Epic’s February 2024 Fortnite deal was never just a plan for character skins. It announced a multiyear effort to build a persistent games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite, alongside Disney’s planned $1.5 billion equity investment in Epic. Since then, the companies have announced franchise crossovers and themed experiences; a full launch date for the larger universe has not been established.
What is the Disney and Fortnite deal?
On February 7, 2024, Disney and Epic Games announced a multiyear collaboration to create an open, persistent social games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. Disney said it would invest $1.5 billion for an equity stake in Epic, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. The planned experience was to be powered by Unreal Engine. Disney’s announcement and Epic’s announcement describe a broad project, not a cosmetics-only agreement.
The companies named Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar as part of the planned universe. They described opportunities for people to play, watch, shop, engage with characters and stories, create experiences and share them. Those are announced ambitions; the announcement did not say that every capability was already available in Fortnite.
Disney CEO Robert A. Iger called it “Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games.” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney described the goal as a “persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem” bringing together Disney and Fortnite communities. Those phrases explain the scale of the promise, but they are not evidence that a unified ecosystem has already arrived.

What Disney content has come to Fortnite?
2024: Characters, Pixar and Marvel
At its August 11, 2024 D23 showcase, Disney announced Disney Animation characters Maleficent, Cruella de Vil and Captain Hook; a first Pixar content arrival with The Incredibles; Star Wars characters and items; and Marvel’s Absolute Doom season. These announcements made franchise content the most visible part of the collaboration, but did not amount to a release schedule for the larger universe. Disney said at the time that the broader experience was still a few years away—a statement made in 2024, not a current forecast. Disney Experiences’ D23 announcement also reported more than 1.3 million concurrent Fortnite viewers for the live showcase.
2025: A Star Wars season and an in-game premiere
On April 29, 2025, Epic announced Fortnite: Galactic Battle, a Star Wars-themed Battle Royale season, and an in-game premiere of Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld ahead of its Disney+ premiere. Epic also announced that eligible players could link Epic and MyDisney accounts to unlock a First Order Stormtrooper Outfit. Epic called account linking a “first step” toward moving between the companies’ ecosystems. These are dated announcements and do not establish that the season, premiere or reward is available now. Epic’s 2025 announcement has the original details.
2026: A reported link to a theme-park attraction
A report by TechRadar dated August 15, 2026 describes Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run | Fortnite, combining the park attraction with a Fortnite island called Smugglers Gambit. TechRadar characterizes it as the first time a physical attraction produced an unlockable Fortnite reward, and contrasts it with earlier Disney-themed islands it describes as largely standalone. This is a reported later development, not part of the 2024 announcement; the report is the basis for the status described here. Read TechRadar’s report.
Are Disney and Epic making a game together?
The announced project is broader than a single conventional game: the companies described a persistent, social games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite, with experiences spanning play, viewing, shopping, creation and sharing. The public announcements also show collaborations and themed content inside Fortnite. That is different from proof that a separate, complete Disney-Epic game or the full interoperable universe has launched.

Progress is easiest to understand by separating the kinds of integration:
- Franchise content: characters, items and themed seasons make Disney properties visible in Fortnite.
- Experiences inside Fortnite: the 2025 Star Wars premiere showed a Disney+ title in-game, while the D23 showcase was also watched live in Fortnite in 2024.
- Interoperability: Epic described account linking in 2025 as a first step between ecosystems; that is a narrower, concrete step than the full persistent universe announced in 2024.
- Park-to-game connection: TechRadar’s 2026 report describes an attraction-linked Fortnite island and reward, a reported bridge between a physical Disney experience and the game.
The sequence demonstrates real crossovers, but it does not by itself establish that every element in the original vision—such as integrated shopping, broad user creation or a persistent shared world—is available.

There is no definitive launch date for the full universe in the announcements covered here. Disney’s “still a few years away” timing was stated at D23 in August 2024 and should not be treated as a current release estimate. Later projects and integrations have been announced or reported, but none of the cited material gives a confirmed date for the complete experience.
What the deal’s audience figures do—and do not—show
At the February 7, 2024 announcement, Disney said Fortnite had more than 100 million active players and creators, and that the Marvel Nexus War with Galactus had drawn more than 15.3 million concurrent players. Those are figures Disney reported in 2024, not current Fortnite audience numbers. Disney Experiences separately reported more than 1.3 million concurrent viewers for the D23 showcase on August 11, 2024. Each number describes a different event or measure; none is a present-day player count.
