What the NBA announced about Mutombo’s death
The NBA’s September 30, 2024, announcement said Mutombo died from brain cancer at age 58, surrounded by family. Commissioner Adam Silver remembered him as both an exceptional defender and a committed humanitarian: “Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.” NBA announcement and statement.
What was known about his illness before his death?
On October 15, 2022, the NBA issued a statement on behalf of Mutombo and his family saying he was “currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor” in Atlanta and asking for privacy. The later death announcement described the cause as brain cancer. Neither statement named a tumor or cancer subtype, specific treatment, prognosis, or detailed timeline, so those details should not be inferred. NBA statement on his treatment.
