Diegetic sound is presented as part of a film’s story world; nondiegetic sound is presented from outside it, for the audience. The source does not have to be visible: an unseen sound can still belong to the scene, and music can fall into either category depending on how the film frames it.
What is the difference between diegetic and nondiegetic sound?
The distinction is about where a film represents a sound as coming from—not whether it is dialogue, music, or an effect. Columbia’s Film Language Glossary defines diegetic sound as sound that “emanates from the story (or narrative) world” of the film: Columbia Film Language Glossary: Diegetic Sound.
| Question | Diegetic sound | Nondiegetic sound |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the source represented? | Inside the story world. | Outside the story world. |
| Can characters hear it? | Typically, yes; it is a clue that the sound belongs to their world. | Typically, no; it is presented for the audience. This is a clue, not the definition. |
| Must the source be visible? | No. It may be offscreen but understood to be in the scene. | No source in the scene is represented as producing it. |
| Common example | A song playing from a radio in the scene. | A score accompanying the action for the audience. |
Examples: what counts as diegetic sound?
Sounds presented as coming from within the story world are diegetic. Common examples include:
- Characters’ dialogue.
- A door closing or another object making a sound in the scene.
- Ambient sound associated with the location, such as activity in a room or street.
- A song playing from a radio, or music performed by a character in the scene.
The source may be offscreen. If the film establishes that a sound comes from somewhere in the scene or story world, not seeing its source does not make it nondiegetic. An unseen phone ringing in the room, for instance, can be diegetic.

Can music be diegetic or nondiegetic?
Yes. Music is not automatically nondiegetic. If characters can hear a song coming from a radio or an instrument in the scene, the film positions it as part of their world, so it is diegetic. A score added as accompaniment for the audience is typically nondiegetic.
Films can reveal a source, keep it out of view, or shift how a sound is presented. Classify the music from its role and context in the scene rather than from the fact that it is music. The Oklahoma State University film resource offers examples of the distinction: Oklahoma State University: Sound.

How to tell which kind of sound you are hearing
- Ask whether the film places a source in the story world. A source may be visible or merely understood to be present in the scene.
- Use character awareness as a clue. If characters react to or appear to hear the sound, that supports a diegetic reading, but it is not the only test.
- Check how the sound functions in context. A radio song and an audience-facing score may both accompany the same action, but the film positions their sources differently.
- Allow for ambiguity or a change in presentation. A film may play with the boundary, so a sound’s classification can depend on what the scene establishes.
Why the distinction matters in film
Calling a sound diegetic or nondiegetic describes its narrative position: whether it belongs to the story world or is presented from outside it. That can help explain how a scene handles point of view, mood, or commentary, but the label alone does not determine a sound’s emotional effect. Describe what the sound does in that particular scene rather than assuming that all score, radio music, or offscreen sound works the same way.
The Filmsound glossary notes that filmmakers can play with the conventions, making the boundary ambiguous or surprising: Filmsound.org: Diegetic and Nondiegetic Sound. A related glossary entry explains the distinction between an offscreen source and a nondiegetic one: University of West Georgia: Film Studies Glossary.
