Did What If…? Redeem Howard the Duck?

What If…? pairs Howard the Duck and Darcy in a chaotic family story. It revives the character’s comic potential, but that is not the same as redeeming the 1986 film.

What If…Howard the Duck Got Hitched? gives Howard a fresh, energetic showcase—but it does not, by itself, redeem the 1986 Howard the Duck movie. The episode makes a case for the character’s comic potential; whether that changes how anyone judges the film is a separate question.

Which What If…? episode features Howard and Darcy?

“What If…Howard the Duck Got Hitched?” is season 3, episode 4 of Marvel’s animated anthology What If…?. Rotten Tomatoes lists its air date as December 25, 2024. Rotten Tomatoes’ season 3 page provides the episode identification and date.

The premise pairs Howard with Darcy Lewis in a marriage-and-parenthood story. They have an egg, and its unusual circumstances attract powerful threats, according to Den of Geek’s episode review. That setup gives the episode room for comic absurdity as well as a straightforward family-stakes plot.

Why does the episode bring the 1986 movie to mind?

Howard’s appearance inevitably recalls Howard the Duck (1986), a film whose reputation has often been poor. A review of the episode explicitly makes that connection, describing the older movie in terms of its derided standing (CBR’s review). That is a critic’s framing, not proof that every viewer shares the same judgment.

The reputation is reflected in one dated snapshot: GamesRadar reported Rotten Tomatoes scores of 13% from critics and 38% from audiences for the 1986 film in a 2025 article (GamesRadar). Those are aggregator scores reported at that time, not permanent measures of a film’s worth; scores and review counts can change.

What does the episode do differently?

It makes Howard part of the story, not just the joke

The episode’s marriage-and-egg premise is ridiculous by design, but it gives Howard a role inside a story about partnership and parenthood. The character’s absurdity can drive the comedy without being the only reason he is on screen. That balance is a useful contrast with the older movie’s reputation as a misfire, though it is an interpretive comparison rather than a measured verdict.

It can lean on Marvel’s wider world

As an installment of What If…?, the episode can place Howard alongside Darcy and use the recognizable Marvel setting as context for its alternate scenario. The 1986 film had to establish Howard as the center of its own feature. That difference in format and continuity helps explain why the animated episode can feel like a lively character detour rather than a second attempt at the same movie.

It mixes broad comedy with personal stakes

An egg pursued by powerful threats invites escalating cartoon chaos; Howard and Darcy’s relationship gives that chaos an emotional anchor. The episode’s appeal lies in the combination: it treats the premise as a gag, but still gives the characters a reason to care about what happens next.

Did What If…? redeem the movie?

Not in the literal sense. The episode offers a new version of Howard and may encourage viewers to reconsider what makes the character entertaining, but the available evidence does not show that it changed public opinion of the 1986 film or was designed to defend it. A better claim is that it redeems the character’s potential for a short, energetic showcase—not the movie’s critical standing.

That distinction matters because a character can work well in a new story without repairing an older film’s writing, tone, or execution. Viewers who enjoy the episode may find the original more interesting as a piece of Marvel history, or simply more curious to revisit. That is renewed attention, not an established rehabilitation.
