Short answer: the available reporting does not show that Welcome to Derry fixed a particular “most hated” character. Fan discussion names several candidates and disagrees about what counts as hatred. The headline is best read as an interpretation of the show’s approach to sympathy, cruelty and tragedy, not a verdict that fans have reached a consensus. This article tests that interpretation against what the creators have said and what the episodes show.
The season-one episode discussion below contains spoilers, including the Black Spot fire and the death of Rich.
What the headline claims, and what it cannot prove
The headline makes two claims. The first is that fans have a shared “most hated character.” The second is that the show “fixed” that character, meaning it made them more sympathetic or resolved the problem viewers had with them. Neither claim can be confirmed from the material available.
The title does not name the character. In audience discussion, the phrasing varies. One Reddit commenter wrote that “some people hate some of the children (Ronnie and Lily for example) more than the RACIST adults.” Another named their own pick as “whatshisface Hanlon,” the father. Those comments show that viewers have strong opinions and different targets. They are anecdotal, not a poll, and they do not establish a fandom-wide ranking. A commenter in the same thread also separated criticism of a fictional role from hostility toward the young actor, which is a distinction worth keeping in any discussion of the show’s children.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
So the honest reading is this: the headline is a thesis about the show’s effect, and it is most useful as a test case for how Welcome to Derry handles characters who are cruel, complicit or simply unpleasant to watch.
Why the show is built around sympathy and fear
Welcome to Derry expands Stephen King’s IT material through several interwoven stories rather than one protagonist’s arc. Its creators, Andy and Barbara Muschietti, have described the show as filling in history the novel leaves open. In a November 5, 2025 interview with TechRadar, Andy Muschietti said the purpose was “putting all the pieces of the puzzle together,” adding that “the book is full of enigmas and questions.” He also pointed to the historical questions the show takes up: “What really happened? What were the causes that led to the burning of the black spot or the massacre of the Bradley Gang?”

That structure matters for the headline. A show that spreads attention across many characters, including adults who take part in violence, is less likely to offer one clean redemption. It is more likely to ask viewers to hold several reactions at once.
Episode 7 and the Black Spot (spoilers)
Episode 7 adapts the Black Spot event from the novel. According to a December 7, 2025 TV Insider interview with both Muschietti siblings, a white-nationalist mob barricades and burns the club while searching for Hank Grogan. Andy Muschietti told TheWrap the same day that the catastrophe was a planned tentpole of the season.

The show also frames Pennywise’s role in that violence. The creators describe Pennywise as exploiting the pain and fear that human violence produces, rather than as the only source of horror. That framing shifts attention toward the people who build the conditions for the attack, which is one reason the episode is hard to read as a simple rehabilitation story for anyone.
Rich’s death and the “tragic love story”
The most direct creator statement about a character’s fate concerns Rich. In the TheWrap interview, Andy Muschietti described Rich as “this character that is so pure and innocent and so full of life.” He explained Rich’s death as serving the tragedy of a love story and concluded, “the kid had to go.”

That is an explanation of narrative purpose. It is not a statement that Rich was redeemed or that another character was repaired by the episode. Readers who want to argue that a character was “fixed” should keep that distinction in view: a tragic function can make a death land harder without changing how the character behaved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test the “fix” claim for a specific character
If you have a candidate in mind, the claim can be checked against five questions. The list below is an analytical framework, not a finding about any particular character.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Before and after: Did the character’s actions change on screen, or only how the story presents them?
- Motivation: Does the show reveal context that explains behavior, such as fear, inherited prejudice or pressure from other adults?
- Consequences: Does the story keep the harm the character caused in view, or let it disappear?
- Persistence: Does the change hold across later episodes, or is it a single scene?
- Earned response: Does the episode give the audience enough material to justify a changed view?
Applying these questions separates a more sympathetic explanation from accountability. A character can become easier to understand without becoming more forgivable, and a show can deepen sympathy while leaving the harm untouched. Those are different outcomes, and the headline blurs them.
Reading companion and where to watch
For readers who want the source material, Stephen King’s IT novel is the most direct companion. The creators describe the series as expanding on the novel’s history and unanswered questions, including the Black Spot and Pennywise’s origins, so the book shows which events are original to the adaptation and which are inherited.
An official companion podcast from HBO, listed on Apple Podcasts with eight episodes, discusses the series with cast, crew and creators. The catalog identifies episode 8 as the season finale.
On availability: a GamesRadar+ interview published December 16, 2025 reported that all of season one was streaming on HBO Max at that time. Streaming rights change by country and over time, so check the service in your region before assuming access.
