Did We Judge Taylor Swift’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Too Quickly?

The surprise release of 15 additional songs complicates first impressions of The Tortured Poets Department. A closer listen can deepen a verdict, but it does not require changing it.

Some first reactions to Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department may have come before listeners had heard the whole project. The standard album arrived on April 19, 2024; that night, Swift unexpectedly released 15 more songs as The Anthology. But the claim that everyone judged it too quickly goes too far: praise and criticism appeared side by side, and no representative study shows that listeners’ opinions later changed.

First, which version did you hear?

The release-day timeline matters. The standard edition of The Tortured Poets Department has 16 tracks, according to Official Charts. On release night, Swift announced another 15 songs under the title The Anthology, bringing the expanded project to 31 tracks, as The Guardian reported.

That surprise creates a real scope problem for first impressions. Someone who reviewed or discussed the standard album before the additional songs appeared was responding to a different listening experience from someone who heard all 31 tracks. It does not invalidate either response; it means that claims about the album should say which version they concern.

There was no single first-day verdict

The Guardian’s April 19 roundup described the early critical response as mostly positive, but it also recorded sharp reservations. Variety called the album “audacious” and “transfixing,” while Rolling Stone described it as “wildly ambitious and gloriously chaotic.” NME, by contrast, criticized some of the writing and argued that the record lacked career-defining shifts. Those are contrasting judgments, not evidence of a unanimous consensus.

#1 Best Overall
The d Poets Department: The Anthology
  • Contains 35 tracks, including 4 exclusive acoustic bonus songs.
  • Features the complete album "THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT" and its companion release, "THE ANTHOLOGY".
  • Physical product format is a CD presented in a standard jewel case.
  • Officially licensed 2024 release from Taylor Swift.
  • Includes a disclaimer that the product image is a digital rendering; actual detailing may vary.

The range is visible in Metacritic’s dated review entries, too. A New York Times excerpt from April 19, 2024, recognizes potent moments while arguing that excess blunts their impact. Other reviews praise the work more strongly, while Consequence notes a marked difference between its halves. The disagreement is about more than whether the songs are good: reviewers weigh length, cohesion, writing, sound, and ambition differently.

What a second listen can—and cannot—settle

Listening again is a useful way to test a quick reaction, not proof that the reaction was wrong. A focused second pass can ask three separate questions:

  • Did I hear the whole release? If your first impression came before the surprise 15-track addition, listen to the standard album and The Anthology as distinct parts of the larger project.
  • What is the music doing beneath the words? Notice vocal phrasing, arrangement, and whether the production reinforces or complicates the emotional content. On “Fortnight,” University of Texas at Austin professor Elizabeth Scala discussed the tension between smooth musical backing and lyrics conveying ordinary-life frustration in an Associated Press report.
  • Does the writing reward close attention? Boston College professor Allison Adair discussed Swift’s engagement with writing and poetic technique in the same AP report. Scala also examined the pressure of routine in the line about mornings feeling like Mondays in an endless February. Attending to imagery and phrasing may reveal more than a quick pass, though it cannot guarantee that the writing will work for every listener.

Song lyrics and printed poems are related, but they are not interchangeable forms. Ada Limón, U.S. Poet Laureate at the time of the AP report, put the distinction plainly: “Poetry and song lyrics aren’t exactly the same (we poets have to make all our music with only words and breath),” she wrote. “But having an icon like Taylor bring more attention to poetry as a genre is exciting.” Listening to words alongside voice and music is therefore a more complete way to assess a song than treating its lyrics as a standalone poetry collection.

The strongest case against reconsidering the album

A patient listen should not become a requirement to like the record. The criticisms of excess, sonic sameness, or clunky writing deserve to be tested against the songs and their sequence, not dismissed as impatience. A listener can hear all 31 tracks, notice details on repeat listens, and still find the project too long or insufficiently varied.

The Tortured Poets Department (Bonus Track) [CD]
  • Taylor Swift's hit CD The Tortured Poets Department!

The Atlantic’s April 24, 2024, essay offered one interpretation of the album through autofiction, recurring imagery, and the pressure to identify real people behind songs. That is a critic’s reading, not confirmation that the narrators or characters map neatly onto identifiable people. Treating songs as clues to private biography can also distract from what the words and music actually do.

Popularity shows reach, not whether the verdict was right

Scale is part of the album’s story, but it cannot resolve an artistic argument. Spotify said that the album exceeded 300 million streams on Spotify in a single day on April 19, 2024, setting a platform record at the time; that figure covers Spotify, not all listening services. Official Charts called it the UK’s biggest album of 2024 and the UK’s best-selling vinyl album of that year. Those measures establish reach in their stated contexts—not quality, critical consensus, or a change in listeners’ opinions.

The available evidence documents a fast-changing release and a divided critical response, but it does not establish how many listeners revised their views or whether average opinion improved over time. “Everyone judged it too quickly” is best understood as a provocation to listen more carefully, not a measured account of public opinion.
