Those findings establish that some attendees developed a diagnosed eye injury, but they do not show that every attendee was hurt or measure exposure across the venue.
What happened at ApeFest
ApeFest took place at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal in Hong Kong on November 4, 2023. The clinical paper describes the outdoor event as running from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Clinical case series.
Yuga Labs said it began receiving reports of eye pain, vision issues, and skin irritation on November 5, the day after the event. In a November 9 assessment reported by am730, the company said the issue was likely connected to UV-A-emitting lamps installed in one corner of the venue. Yuga Labs also said the reports were “deeply concerning” and encouraged people with symptoms to seek medical assistance. am730 report Contemporaneous statement coverage.
What the medical cases show
A 2024 peer-reviewed retrospective case series reviewed records from public and private health sectors and described eight people who sought care after the November 4 exposure. All eight were diagnosed with acute photokeratitis, an injury to the eye’s surface associated with ultraviolet exposure. All reported eye pain; six had red eye, and five experienced tearing and photophobia, or sensitivity to light. Clinical case series.

This is clinical evidence about eight care-seeking patients, not a survey of every ApeFest attendee. It does not establish the total number of people exposed or affected. Yuga Labs’ reported count of 22 complaints is a separate organizer-reported measure; it should not be treated as equivalent to the eight diagnosed cases. am730 report Clinical case series.
What is known—and not known—about the lamps
UV-A lamps were Yuga Labs’ suspected cause, based on the company’s assessment reported at the time. The clinical case series documents patients’ diagnoses after the event; the available evidence does not independently establish the exact lamp model, technical specifications, or UV irradiance at the venue. It also does not determine how much UV any individual received or establish long-term outcomes for every attendee.

The distinction between UV-A and UV-C matters. The FDA’s cited warning concerns specific unsafe UV-C wands; it is general safety guidance, not evidence that ApeFest used UV-C lamps. FDA UV-C wand safety communication.

Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection advises minimizing direct exposure of skin and eyes to ultraviolet radiation. The FDA likewise warns that certain UV-C wands can injure skin and eyes and advises against using listed unsafe products.
