Jordan, but there is no public evidence establishing that his remarks about ballet and opera caused the loss—or that they had no effect. The result is confirmed; the reason voters chose as they did is not.
Who won the 2026 Best Actor Oscar?
At the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, Michael B. Jordan won Actor in a Leading Role for Sinners. Chalamet was nominated for Marty Supreme, which was also nominated for Best Picture. The Academy’s official ceremony results confirm the winner and nominees. The awards honored films released in 2025 and were held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
The Associated Press described Jordan’s win as Chalamet again missing out on his first Oscar. That reports the outcome, not a reason for it.
What did Chalamet say about ballet and opera?
Variety reported that the remarks came during a CNN/Variety town hall with Matthew McConaughey on February 21, 2026. The wider conversation concerned theatrical moviegoing and whether audiences would support it. Chalamet said: “And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive.’ Even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore. All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”

The line about “no one cares” was part of a longer comment that also included an expression of respect and a joke about losing viewership. It was not a statement about Oscar voters or a discussion of the Academy’s ballot.
How did ballet and opera figures respond?
Variety reported responses from ballet and opera organizations, including the Royal Ballet and Opera, which invited Chalamet to attend and said thousands of people attend performances nightly. That attendance wording is the organization’s claim as reported by Variety, not an independently verified audience statistic.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Misty Copeland, a ballet artist and former American Ballet Theatre principal dancer, argued that Chalamet’s opportunities as a movie star are connected to the relevance of opera and ballet. That was Copeland’s response, not a measurement of either art form’s popularity.

The available evidence does not establish that. The remarks and public criticism were reported before the March 15 ceremony, so the controversy preceded the vote’s public result. But chronology is not proof of causation: the sources do not disclose Academy members’ individual votes, show whether the comments changed anyone’s ballot, or quantify any effect on Chalamet’s chances.

It is therefore just as unsupported to say the controversy cost him the award as it is to say it definitely had no effect. The Academy’s official results identify Jordan as the winner, but provide no explanation for why voters chose him. Public reaction and press coverage cannot stand in for evidence about ballots.
