The available reporting does not establish that the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires caused or contributed to David Lynch’s death. The Independent reported that his death certificate listed cardiac arrest due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with dehydration as a significant contributor. Reports that Lynch was evacuated shortly before his death and that his health had declined are relevant context, but they do not prove a medical connection to the fires.
What was reported as David Lynch’s cause of death?
In a February 7, 2025 report, The Independent said a death certificate published by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health listed cardiac arrest due to COPD, with dehydration as a significant contributor. This account is based on the newspaper’s report of the certificate; the certificate itself is not directly reviewed here.
Reuters reported Lynch’s death on January 16, 2025, at age 78, when no cause had yet been released. That was the announcement-day account, not a later explanation of the cause.
What is known about the wildfire connection?
The Independent separately reported that Lynch had been evacuated from his home in the days before his death and that sources cited by Deadline described a decline in his health. Those reports do not establish that he inhaled wildfire smoke, identify a medical mechanism linking the fires to his death, or report a finding from a treating clinician or medical examiner that the fires contributed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters: a reported evacuation and health decline can place events in context, but timing alone cannot show that one caused the other. The reporting available does not confirm a wildfire-related contribution; it also does not prove there was no effect.
What health problems had Lynch discussed before the fires?
In August 2024, Reuters reported that Lynch had emphysema, which he said resulted from years of smoking. He said he had quit smoking for more than two years and was worried that illness could further threaten his health. Reuters quoted him: “But there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema.” The Independent reported that he had been diagnosed in 2020.

The family’s public statement, quoted by the Associated Press on January 16, was a memorial, not a medical account: “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’”
