Yes: the group won Best Rock Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards. The song was also nominated for Record Of The Year, but Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” won that category. AI helped make the Beatles’ final track possible by separating recorded audio elements; the available accounts describe no AI-generated John Lennon vocal and do not show that the technology caused either Grammy result.
What Grammy did “Now And Then” win?
The Beatles won the 2025 Grammy for Best Rock Performance for “Now And Then.” The song’s other prominent nomination was Record Of The Year, which it did not win: Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” took that award. The Recording Academy’s results list the nomination and winners, but do not attribute either the nomination or the Beatles’ win to AI. See the Recording Academy’s 2025 Grammy results.
That distinction matters because Record Of The Year and Best Rock Performance are separate categories. Record Of The Year recognizes the recording artist and eligible production and engineering contributors, rather than simply naming a song as a general “Grammy winner.” Calling “Now And Then” a Record Of The Year winner would be incorrect.
Was John Lennon’s voice created by AI?
No. The accounts from the Beatles and producer Giles Martin describe using audio-separation technology to isolate elements already present in recordings. They do not describe generating a new Lennon performance. In an interview with the Recording Academy, Martin specifically distinguished the process from generative AI: it made parts of a mixed recording easier to separate and work with.

Martin, identified by the Academy as a Beatles remixer and producer, explained: “We couldn’t have worked on these songs six months ago; the technology had to be developed in place so we could do this — separate drums, bass and guitar, and have the different elements.” Read the Recording Academy interview with Giles Martin.
In practical terms, separating audio can make a vocal or instrument more usable when it is embedded in a recording with other sounds. That is different from asking a generative system to invent Lennon’s voice or sing words he never recorded. The Beatles’ official store describes Lennon’s voice as pristine in the finished mix; its description of machine-aided learning refers to the separate stereo remix of “Love Me Do,” not to creating a new vocal for “Now And Then.”

How the Beatles assembled the recording
“Now And Then” was built across decades, not made from scratch by AI. The Beatles’ October 2023 announcement describes it as written and sung by John Lennon, then developed and worked on by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, before McCartney and Starr finished it more than four decades later. The official store and the Recording Academy provide more detail about the different recording periods.
- Lennon’s demo: A home demo recorded in the mid-to-late 1970s, described in the Academy’s nomination coverage as a 1977 demo.
- Harrison’s contribution: Guitar parts from the Beatles’ 1995 Anthology sessions, including guitar melodies.
- McCartney and Starr’s work: Vocal and instrumental parts recorded in 2022; the Academy’s account specifically notes Starr’s drumming and backing vocals.
- The finishing work: McCartney and Starr completed the track with a new string arrangement. Paul McCartney and Giles Martin are credited as producers.
The Beatles’ announcement gave November 2, 2023, as the worldwide release date. The official store lists November 3, 2023, as the release date for the 7-inch single, which pairs “Now And Then” with the Beatles’ first UK single, “Love Me Do.” The store also lists a CD single. Those dates refer to different release details, not a contradiction about when the song first appeared. Read the Beatles’ announcement and see the official 7-inch single listing.

What the technology changed—and what it didn’t
The separation process made it possible to work more clearly with sounds that had been difficult to isolate in an existing mix. That helped the team use Lennon’s recorded demo as part of a finished track alongside later Beatles contributions. It did not make the song a wholly synthetic performance, and the cited Grammy results do not establish that the technology persuaded voters or produced the award.
The difference is also relevant to the emotional meaning of the recording. Ringo Starr said in the Beatles’ announcement: “It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room, so it was very emotional for all of us. It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.” The remark describes the experience of working with Lennon’s existing recording, not a claim that AI recreated him.

Why the Grammy and AI connection needs care
The technology was part of the track’s production story, while the Grammy is an award outcome. The Academy’s official results establish that “Now And Then” was nominated for Record Of The Year and won Best Rock Performance. They do not say AI caused the nomination or the win, and no cited source measures how the technology affected Grammy voting. It is therefore accurate to say audio-separation technology helped the Beatles finish and mix the recording; it is not established that AI gave them a Grammy.
The Recording Academy also reported in 2024 that the single became the Beatles’ 35th top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. That is a chart milestone attributed to the Academy’s coverage, not a measure of AI’s effect or a Grammy statistic. Read the Academy’s nomination coverage.
