One fan theory, reported by NewsFinale, suggests Swift’s song “Wildest Dreams” may be about him—but that is speculation about a song’s subject, not confirmation of a romance or a secret muse.
What is the claim about Taylor Swift and Matthew Gray Gubler?
Online discussion has linked Swift and Gubler, with some coverage framing the idea as a possible romance. The List describes it as a rumor and says there is no hard evidence establishing that the two dated: The List’s rumor overview.
That distinction matters. A claim repeated in fan discussion is not evidence that a relationship happened. The sources reviewed do not include a public confirmation from Swift or Gubler, and that absence should not be treated as proof about their private lives.

- The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th
“Wildest Dreams” is the only specific song identified in this claim by the reviewed coverage. The evidence does not support presenting it—or any other song—as a confirmed account of a relationship with Gubler.
Why lyrics cannot confirm a relationship
Listeners can interpret lyrics in light of public figures’ lives, but an interpretation is not the same as biographical evidence. A song may draw on imagination, composite experiences, or details that listeners cannot independently identify. A perceived match between lyrics and someone’s life does not prove that person was the subject, much less that the songwriter had a relationship with them.

Variety reports Swift objected to treating songs as “paternity tests” to identify who she is writing about. The outlet also reports her saying, “That dude didn’t write the song. I did.” These remarks are context for why confident claims about a song’s subject can overreach; they are not a comment confirming or denying Gubler as the inspiration for “Wildest Dreams.” See Variety’s coverage.
