Did Sony Buy KADOKAWA? What the Alliance Could Mean for Anime and Manga

Sony’s KADOKAWA deal became a strategic alliance and minority investment, not a disclosed takeover. Here’s what the companies announced—and what remains unproven about its effects on anime and manga.

Sony did not announce a full acquisition of KADOKAWA. The companies instead formed a strategic alliance and completed a minority share investment. KADOKAWA reported that Sony held 11.01% of its shares as of March 2026. Their plans could broaden how KADOKAWA’s anime, manga and other intellectual property reach audiences, but the announced partnership does not establish that Sony controls the publisher or has tightened its grip on either market.

What happened to Sony’s proposed KADOKAWA acquisition?

Sony said its initial proposal in October 2024 was to acquire KADOKAWA shares. On December 19, 2024, the companies announced a different outcome: a strategic capital and business alliance. KADOKAWA agreed to issue 12,054,100 new shares to Sony for approximately ¥50 billion on January 7, 2025. Including Sony’s earlier shares, the transaction was expected to bring its holding to approximately 10% and make Sony KADOKAWA’s largest shareholder at the time of the announcement. Sony’s announcement of the alliance describes the transaction and the areas of planned cooperation.

That approximate 10% was the announced post-transaction figure, not the latest reported holding. In its shareholder information, KADOKAWA reported Sony held 16,381 thousand shares, or 11.01%, as of March 2026. That is a minority stake; the figure alone does not show that Sony took over KADOKAWA’s editorial or operational control. KADOKAWA’s shareholder information gives the dated holding.

What did Sony say about buying more shares?

In its December 19, 2024 investor-relations announcement, Sony stated: “At this time, Sony does not plan to acquire additional KADOKAWA shares after the execution of the acquisition.” That is a statement of Sony’s plans at that time; it is not evidence of a later plan to buy KADOKAWA outright. The materials cited here do not establish that Sony subsequently announced a full acquisition. Sony’s investor-relations announcement contains the statement.

What collaboration did the companies propose?

The alliance announcement set out possible areas for cooperation and said the companies planned to discuss specific initiatives. These were prospective areas, not confirmation that every project had been launched:

  • Joint investment in content and finding new creators.
  • Bringing KADOKAWA intellectual property to more formats, including global live-action film and television adaptations.
  • Anime co-production and wider global distribution of KADOKAWA anime through Sony.
  • Expanding the global publishing of KADOKAWA games.
  • Training workers in virtual production.

KADOKAWA CEO Takeshi Natsuno said the alliance was expected to strengthen the company’s capacity to create intellectual property and give it more options to adapt and expand that work globally with Sony’s support. Sony President, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki described the aim as working together on KADOKAWA’s “Global Media Mix” strategy and Sony’s “Creative Entertainment Vision.” Those descriptions express the companies’ intentions, not proof of completed projects or their results. The alliance announcement includes their statements.

Why are anime and manga central to the story?

Sony’s May 2025 strategy presentation identified anime as a growth driver and listed its KADOKAWA alliance among its anime initiatives. It also described plans to expand Crunchyroll’s offerings to include anime merchandise e-commerce, mobile-game library services and manga. Sony reported more than 17 million Crunchyroll paid members as of March 31, 2025. That dated subscriber figure gives context for Sony’s stated anime ambitions; it is not a measure of anime market share, nor does it show that the alliance changed audience or market outcomes. Sony’s Corporate Strategy Presentation 2025 sets out these priorities.

KADOKAWA’s own FY2026–FY2031 management plan describes publishing, manga and international media-mix ambitions. The two companies’ stated interests overlap in extending intellectual property across formats and markets. The existence of shared goals does not, by itself, establish a transfer of KADOKAWA’s editorial authority or day-to-day operations to Sony. KADOKAWA’s management-plan materials describe its strategy.

Could the alliance tighten Sony’s grip on anime and manga?

It could strengthen Sony’s position if the proposed cooperation helps bring KADOKAWA properties to wider international audiences, produces successful adaptations, or connects more content to Sony’s distribution and services. That is a plausible strategic possibility: Sony has described anime as a growth area, while KADOKAWA has a large intellectual-property and publishing business. The companies’ stated ambitions do not establish that these outcomes have occurred.

“Tighten its grip” is stronger than the available evidence supports. The cited company announcements and shareholder data do not establish a change in industry-wide market share, exclusive access to KADOKAWA works, reduced creator choice, consumer price increases, or anticompetitive harm. They also do not report a regulator or court finding about the alliance’s competitive effects. A minority shareholding and proposed areas of collaboration are not, on their own, proof of market control.
