Roddy Piper and Hulk Hogan’s fierce rivalry was built for wrestling audiences, but it does not prove they personally hated each other. Piper later said they had “a tremendous amount of respect for each other” and described their real-life heat as competition over who drew and made WrestleMania. That is Piper’s account—not confirmation of Hogan’s private feelings.
Why did Piper and Hogan become rivals?
The public feud grew from a wrestling storyline. WWE’s history traces its start to June 26, 1984, when Piper attacked Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka during Piper’s Pit. WWE says the attack sparked a heated Piper–Snuka rivalry and put Hogan, Snuka’s friend, on course for a collision with Piper. The angle gave the audience a clear reason to see the two stars as enemies; it is not, by itself, evidence of personal animosity. WWE’s event history

WrestleMania I
On March 31, 1985, the rivalry reached the main event of the first WrestleMania. Hogan teamed with Mr. T against Piper and Paul Orndorff; Hogan and Mr. T won. It was a tag-team match, not a one-on-one Hogan–Piper bout. WWE’s event history and the Associated Press account document the matchup and result.

In a published interview with Slam Wrestling, Piper said, “But we always had a tremendous amount of respect for each other.” He added that “The heat between Hogan and I came from who really drew and made WrestleMania.” In Piper’s telling, the rivalry had a competitive professional dimension alongside its on-screen hostility. His recollection establishes what Piper said; it does not establish Hogan’s private view or the complete history between them. Slam Wrestling interview
