No reliable evidence in the available reporting establishes that Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow dated. The sources instead describe a long friendship and a close professional relationship. That is not proof of every detail of their private history, but their on-screen romance as Tony Stark and Pepper Potts is not evidence of a real-life relationship.
What the public record says
An Associated Press report published by Deseret News in 2013 described Downey and Paltrow as longtime friends and co-stars who had known each other for 20 years. The report presents them discussing their careers, families and Iron Man 3 as comfortable friends. The 20 years refers to how long they had known one another, not to a dating relationship. In 2025, Paltrow described Downey as “like a brother” and said they were like family, according to CinemaBlend’s account of her remarks at The Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment event. She also said, “I adore him, and he’s such an inspiring artist.” CinemaBlend’s report
Why the dating question comes up
Downey and Paltrow share an affectionate public rapport, and their characters Tony Stark and Pepper Potts have a romantic relationship in the Marvel films. That fictional storyline can make the actors’ chemistry feel personal, but it tells us about the characters, not the actors’ dating history.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The cited reporting supports describing Downey and Paltrow as longtime friends and co-stars. It does not substantiate a claim that they dated. The sources reviewed do not include a direct, categorical statement from either actor that they never had a private romantic relationship, so the most accurate conclusion is limited: no reliable evidence found here shows that they dated.
Biography.com lists Downey’s marriages to Deborah Falconer from 1992 to 2004 and to Susan Levin from 2005 onward, and says he met Levin on the set of Gothika in 2003. That timeline provides biographical context; it does not, on its own, resolve whether Downey and Paltrow ever dated. Biography.com’s Robert Downey Jr. biography
