No reliable figure in the available contemporary reporting confirms that Renée Zellweger ate 4,000 calories a day while preparing for the 2001 film Bridget Jones’s Diary. Reports from the film’s release say she gained weight for the role, but the 4,000-calorie claim surfaced in coverage of a sequel and should not be presented as a fact about the original.
What the 2001 reports say about Zellweger’s weight gain
Contemporary accounts agree that Zellweger gained weight to play Bridget Jones, but they give different estimates. A Los Angeles Times interview published April 8, 2001, reported 17 pounds. An ABC News report published April 22, 2001, put the gain at about 20 pounds. These are separate attributed estimates, not a single settled measurement.
The Los Angeles Times described foods Zellweger ate while filming in England: beans and toast, croissants, cheesecake, and buttered biscuits. It did not report a daily calorie total. Those food descriptions cannot establish how many calories she consumed.
Where the 4,000-calorie claim comes from
An article hosted by The Standard, with a Daily Mail byline and a displayed date of April 12, 2012, said Zellweger was eating more than 4,000 calories a day for a Bridget Jones sequel. Its context is the sequel, not the 2001 original. The report does not justify transferring that figure to the first film.

Separate October 2003 reports about Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason confirm that Zellweger was preparing to gain weight again. The Guardian quoted her describing “healthy food, but with hidden fat.” An Associated Press report described toast and cream cheese and said she was working with a nutritionist. Neither passage gives a daily calorie figure.
Why she changed her appearance for the role
Zellweger described the gain as part of preparing to portray the character as she understood her. In the Los Angeles Times interview, she said, “Bridget is not a woman with a weight problem. She’s a woman with a self-image problem.” The film is based on Helen Fielding’s 1996 novel, Bridget Jones’s Diary.

These are their perspectives on the role and its reception, not nutritional or medical guidance.
