But the contemporaneous reports documented his claim, not an independent confirmation of the procedure or proof that the chains were gold.
What Dan Sur said about the chains
In a social-media video quoted by Colombian outlet Noticias Caracol, Sur described hooks implanted beneath his skin, with the chains attached to them. He said he wanted a look different from people dyeing their hair. His explanation, translated from Spanish, was: “The truth is that I wanted to do something different because I see that everyone dyes their hair. I hope not everyone copies me now.” Noticias Caracol reported his statement on August 29, 2021.
What is known—and what is not verified
Reports placed the procedure in April 2021; Teleamazonas said the first video showing the look was posted on April 10. Those details came from coverage of Sur’s public account and images. The reporting reviewed here does not independently establish that hooks were surgically implanted, that the chains were genuine gold, or that he replaced all of his natural hair. Viewers also questioned whether the implantation was real, as Noticias Caracol noted.
BET’s September 13, 2021 report described the chains as implanted hair and said the procedure reportedly took place in April. Teleamazonas reported on September 19, 2021 that Sur said he removed chains one at a time, but did not give an exact cost.

Why the story raised safety concerns
In 2021 coverage by The Indian Express, plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Agullo raised concerns that implants could create a path for bacteria and that weight or an accidental tug could dislodge an implant or fracture the skull. These were the doctor’s concerns about the claimed modification—not reported injuries to Sur or an individualized medical assessment. The Indian Express published the report on September 12, 2021, and updated it September 15.
A separate 2021 peer-reviewed case report described squamous cell carcinoma after artificial synthetic hair implantation. That was a different procedure; it does not establish a connection between cancer and the chain hooks Sur described. The case report appeared in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open on January 26, 2021.

A viral look, not a recommendation
Sur’s appearance became a widely reported celebrity story, but the accounts available establish what he said and how the look appeared in images—not a medically verified procedure. The story is not evidence that implanted chains are a safe or validated way to style hair, and it does not provide a basis for imitating the modification.
