What does the book claim?
Meryle Secrest’s Princess Margaret and the Curse: An Inquiry into a Royal Life was published on September 9, 2025, according to its Google Books listing. The book examines Margaret’s life in the context of her mother’s family and the family’s relationship with alcohol.
Contemporaneous reports by Tyla and Royal Central describe Secrest’s suggestion as a comparison between biographical accounts of Margaret and traits associated with FASD; the reports say she cited Dr. Kenneth Jones’s work. This is a biographical hypothesis, not a diagnosis.
Is there evidence that Margaret had FASD?
The available reporting does not establish that Margaret had FASD or a clinical diagnosis, and it does not provide firm evidence that she was exposed to alcohol before birth. The claim should therefore be described as speculation attributed to the book—not as a fact about Margaret.

Individual details such as stature, temperament, or writing difficulties cannot by themselves establish a diagnosis. Retrospective comparisons with condition-associated traits are not a substitute for clinical assessment and evidence about prenatal exposure.
What does FASD mean?
National FASD, a UK organisation, describes prenatal alcohol exposure as something that can affect the developing brain and body, with varied effects, strengths, and support needs among people with FASD. It says FASD is the diagnostic term used in the UK; “fetal alcohol syndrome” (FAS) is an older term associated with a narrower set of facial features. The organisation says it does not speculate about whether a particular person has FASD.

National FASD chief executive Sandra Butcher said people with FASD “can, and do, live fulfilling, productive and creative lives with the appropriate support.” Using person-first language—“people with FASD”—reflects that a diagnosis does not define a person’s whole life.
What was the pregnancy guidance at the time?
National FASD’s statement of July 30, 2025, says there was no advice on prenatal alcohol risks in 1930. It also says UK Chief Medical Officers’ guidance changed in 2016 to state that the safest approach is not to drink alcohol during pregnancy, and that no safe amount has been established. That historical context does not show what advice the Queen Mother personally received or whether she drank during the pregnancy.

What National FASD says about awareness
In its July 30, 2025 statement, National FASD said: “While we as an organisation do not speculate on who may or may not have FASD, we are pleased to note that there is increased public awareness these days of the risks of alcohol and pregnancy and that there are changes underway for better diagnosis and support for people with FASD.”
The organisation also reported an estimate of 2–4% of the population, citing a University of Salford study. This is National FASD’s attributed estimate, not an independently verified figure here.
