Executive producer Jeremy Grimaldi said the photographs of Jennifer Pan in Netflix’s What Jennifer Did were real, and that their backgrounds had been anonymized to protect a source. But his reported comments did not identify the tools or editing steps used, so they do not settle whether AI-assisted editing played any role.
What sparked the AI allegations?
What Jennifer Did is a 2024 Netflix documentary directed by Jenny Popplewell. Netflix says the film follows the case after Jennifer Pan called 911 to report that her parents had been shot, using police interrogation footage and testimony from people involved. Netflix’s overview of the film and its Media Center listing establish that context.
The controversy focused on photographs shown in the film. The Independent reported apparent visual irregularities, including in a pictured hand, which led viewers to question whether the images had been manipulated with AI. Those visual features prompted suspicion; they do not, by themselves, reveal what editing occurred or identify a particular tool. The Independent also noted that it was difficult to determine what editing, if any, had taken place. The Independent’s report describes the concerns and the uncertainty.
What did producer Jeremy Grimaldi say?
Futurism reported Grimaldi’s comments from an interview with the Toronto Star. He said: “Any filmmaker will use different tools, like Photoshop, in films.” He also said: “The photos of Jennifer are real photos of her. The foreground is exactly her. The background has been anonymized to protect the source.” Futurism’s report attributes those statements to Grimaldi, an executive producer of the documentary.

His explanation distinguishes the subject of the photographs from their backgrounds: he asserted that the photographs and foreground were real, while saying the backgrounds were anonymized for source protection. He did not name the software or describe how the backgrounds were altered. Mentioning Photoshop as an example of tools filmmakers use is not confirmation that Photoshop—or any particular feature—was used on these images.
Is it confirmed that AI was used?
No. The sources reporting the allegations and Grimaldi’s response do not establish whether AI-assisted editing was used. The Independent described the visible concerns but said the editing was difficult to determine; Grimaldi’s reported remarks say the photos were real and their backgrounds anonymized, without identifying the method. The available reporting does not include original image files, edit histories or a forensic analysis that could resolve the question.

The careful conclusion is that the images were questioned because of apparent distortions, and the producer said their backgrounds had been anonymized. The specific editing workflow—and whether it involved AI—remains unconfirmed in these reports.

The film concerns the November 8, 2010 attack at the Pan family’s home in Markham, Ontario. TIME reported that Bich Ha Pan was killed and her husband, Huei Hann Pan, survived. TIME also says the documentary drew heavily on research and police footage associated with Grimaldi’s 2016 book, A Daughter’s Deadly Deception: The Jennifer Pan Story. That background explains Grimaldi’s connection to the case, but it does not verify how the documentary’s photographs were edited.
