The movie behind the “$320 million” headline is Netflix’s 2025 science-fiction film The Electric State. Its production budget was reported at $320 million, but Netflix has not publicly confirmed that figure as an audited expenditure. And “literally no one likes it” is an exaggeration: critics’ ratings are very low, while Rotten Tomatoes’ audience indicator is notably higher.
Which Netflix movie is the headline about?
The Electric State is a retro-futuristic science-fiction adventure directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. Set in an alternate version of the 1990s, it follows orphaned teenager Michelle and a robot as she searches for her brother. Netflix describes the film on its official Media Center page.

The headline appeared in a BGR article by Andy Meek published March 14, 2025. Its phrase “literally no one likes” is opinionated hyperbole, not a measured finding about every viewer.
Did Netflix really spend $320 million on it?
Forbes reported on March 9, 2025, that the film’s production budget was $320 million before marketing, citing Total Film and Space. The Associated Press also described the budget as reported and potentially above $300 million. These are media reports, not an audited Netflix disclosure; Netflix has not verified the $320 million figure in the sources cited here. See Forbes’ report and the Associated Press review.

The reported amount refers to production, not marketing or Netflix’s total expenditure on the release. It also does not establish whether the film made or lost money: the cited sources do not show how Netflix attributes streaming revenue or calculates the title’s profitability.
Do people actually like The Electric State?
On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 14% Tomatometer based on 158 critic reviews and a 67% Popcornmeter based on more than 5,000 ratings. That snapshot indicates a sharp difference between critics’ reception and the platform’s audience-rating measure. Both scores can change over time, and neither is a representative poll of all Netflix viewers.
Rank #2
The BGR article cited an 18% critics’ score in March 2025. That was a historical snapshot; it should not be confused with Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed 14% score on October 8, 2026.
Critics’ complaints were severe, but they remain reviews rather than proof of a universal verdict. AP film critic Lindsey Bahr wrote that the film was “lacking a spark and a soul that might distinguish it as memorable or special.” That is Bahr’s assessment, not a finding about every audience member.

The ratings establish that critics were broadly negative, but they do not by themselves explain why. Bahr’s AP review points to a lack of distinctive energy and emotional impact. That criticism helps explain the gap between a large production and an underwhelming critical response without implying that every reviewer objected for the same reason.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the film based on a book?
Yes. The Electric State adapts Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel. Netflix Tudum notes that the film changes genre from the book and reports a positive response from Stålenhag, so it would be inaccurate to say the adaptation was universally rejected by its creator. Joe Russo described the directors’ interest in the genre this way: “We grew up on a steady diet of science-fiction and fantasy.” Netflix’s Tudum article discusses the adaptation and its source material.
