The Rehearsal season 2 finale depicts Nathan Fielder piloting a Boeing 737 with actors presented as passengers. But the episode’s autism storyline does not establish that he received—or dodged—a diagnosis: it ends unresolved in the available reporting.
What happens in the finale?
The season 2 finale brings Fielder’s pilot-training storyline to a Boeing 737 flight sequence. Entertainment coverage describes him obtaining pilot credentials, training on a 737 and completing the sequence with actors presented as passengers. That is not the same as evidence that it was a regularly scheduled airline flight or that the people aboard were paying passengers. Wesley Stenzel’s contemporaneous report and IndieWire’s coverage describe the episode’s events; the precise licensing, operator and regulatory arrangements are not established by primary aviation documentation in those accounts.
In voiceover, Fielder explains his stated reason for undertaking the training: “When I first began this project, I had decided there was no better way to understand pilots than to become one myself.” The quote explains the project’s premise; it is not independent evidence about aviation safety.
Did he really fly the plane with people aboard?
The careful answer is that the finale depicts Fielder at the controls of a 737 in a sequence with actors presented as passengers, and contemporaneous entertainment reports describe him completing the flight sequence. The sources cited here do not independently verify the flight through aviation records, establish its exact regulatory setup or show that it was a commercial passenger service. So it is fair to describe what the show depicts and what reports say, but not to add unsupported claims about the flight’s legal status or operational details.

Did Fielder dodge an autism diagnosis?
No confirmed diagnosis—or evasion of one—is established by the available coverage. The finale’s account includes Fielder raising questions about his medical paperwork, undergoing a scan and receiving a voicemail about the results, which he deletes. That leaves the storyline unresolved; it does not establish a clinical conclusion or reveal Fielder’s actual health status. Stenzel’s report and IndieWire’s report describe the narrative, not a verified diagnosis.

The season’s framing centers on cockpit communication and interactions between pilots. Fielder’s training is part of the show’s attempt to explore that subject from inside the role. The finale is a comedy-documentary episode, not a general aviation-safety study, and its depiction should not be treated as evidence of how pilots are trained or how safe a particular flight arrangement is.
