Public accounts do not establish whether Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley got along personally while making Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. They do establish that their resemblance was striking enough to cause confusion—including, Knightley recalled, between their mothers on set. The actresses also did not play the same character: Portman was Padmé Amidala, and Knightley was Sabé, Padmé’s handmaiden and decoy.
What each actress played
| Actress | Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|---|
| Natalie Portman | Padmé Amidala | The queen of Naboo, who uses a decoy to protect her identity. |
| Keira Knightley | Sabé | Padmé’s handmaiden and lookalike decoy. |
The disguise is central to the film’s premise: the two characters resemble one another, but they are distinct people. Knightley’s role as Sabé is identified in a 2014 UPI report and a 2025 CinemaBlend report.
What Knightley has said about being mistaken for Portman
In 2014, Knightley told UPI that people often approached her thinking she was Portman, and that she sometimes signed autographs or posed for photographs as Portman. The anecdote shows how often the resemblance led to mix-ups beyond the film set; it does not describe the actresses’ relationship with each other.
Knightley later recalled, “Our mums did actually confuse us on set”. Marie Claire Australia reported the line while citing a 2020 interview. It is a firsthand recollection of mistaken identity, not a statement about whether the two actresses were friends or had friction.

No. The accounts cited here do not provide a direct answer about Portman and Knightley’s personal rapport. Sharing a production, portraying lookalike characters, and being confused for one another do not establish friendship, hostility, or any particular level of closeness.
Lucasfilm’s 2019 oral history of the film offers production context and recollections from people involved in making it, but does not settle how the two actresses felt about one another. The sound conclusion is therefore limited: their resemblance prompted real mix-ups, while their personal relationship during filming is not established by these public accounts.

Why the question persists
On screen, Sabé’s disguise is meant to make her stand in for Padmé, and Knightley and Portman looked sufficiently alike that even family members reportedly confused them during production. That combination makes it easy to infer an off-screen bond from the roles and anecdote. But resemblance and shared scenes are evidence about casting and the story’s deception—not proof of how well the performers got along.
