Mick Jagger made an unannounced appearance at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, to present Best Original Song. He joked that he was not the producers’ first choice and that they had wanted Bob Dylan instead. Entertainment Weekly reported that a source close to the situation confirmed the story was a joke—not verified evidence that Dylan was actually booked or that Jagger formally replaced him.
What did Mick Jagger say about Bob Dylan?
Jagger told the audience he was honored to present the award but “wasn’t the first choice.” He said the producers had wanted Dylan, who supposedly declined because the year’s best songs were “obviously in the movie, A Complete Unknown.” Jagger then recounted Dylan saying, “You should find somebody younger,” and joked, “I’m younger than Bob, I’ll do it. So here I am.” The remarks are reported by Entertainment Weekly; they are not an independently supplied Academy transcript.

Did Jagger really replace Dylan?
Not as an established backstage fact. Jagger’s story framed him as stepping in after Dylan declined, but Entertainment Weekly reported that a source close to the situation confirmed the account was a joke. The reporting does not independently verify that Dylan was asked, refused, or gave the reason Jagger attributed to him.
The surprise was his appearance: E! reported that Jagger was not listed on the evening’s program. E!’s ceremony coverage and the Los Angeles Times live coverage also placed the joke in the ceremony.

Which Oscar did Mick Jagger present?
Jagger presented the Academy Award for Best Original Song. “El Mal,” from Emilia Pérez, won. The other nominees named in the coverage were:
- “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight

- “Never Too Late” from Elton John: Never Too Late
