It was reported as canceled—but the claim was disputed. People en Español attributed the cancellation of a planned 2008 Luis Miguel show at Madison Square Garden to promoter Félix Cabrera, citing weak ticket sales and the U.S. economic crisis. A report about a statement from Luis Miguel’s office said the October 31 concert had not been canceled and tickets were nearly sold out. The available reports do not establish which account was correct or whether the show ultimately took place.
What happened, according to the competing reports?
The accounts published in October 2008 conflict on both the concert date and whether it was canceled. Neither report alone settles the event’s final status.

| People en Español, English report, October 14, 2008 | October 13 | It says promoter Félix Cabrera took the initiative to suspend the planned concert because most tickets had not sold, linking the problem to the U.S. economic crisis. Read the report. |
| People en Español, Spanish report, October 13, 2008 | October 31 | It also attributes the cancellation to Cabrera and quotes him describing the potential financial losses. Read the report. |
| El Siglo de Torreón, October 14, 2008 | October 31 | Reporting an October 14 statement from Luis Miguel’s office, it says the concert was not canceled and tickets were nearly sold out. This is a secondary report of the office’s statement, not the original statement itself. Read the report. |
The English People en Español story gives October 13, while its Spanish-language counterpart and the denial account give October 31. The reports also do not offer an official Madison Square Garden cancellation notice or an independent primary record confirming whether an October 31 event took place.
Why did the promoter say the show was being suspended?
People en Español attributed the decision to Cabrera, who said ticket sales were very low and cited the U.S. economic crisis. The Spanish report quoted him saying: “Yo preferí perder los 75 mil dólares de adelanto que le di a Luis Miguel y no 300 o 400 mil dólares que conllevaría el show en caso de realizarse, ya que las ventas en las boletas estaban casi nulas y fue mejor suspenderlo”. In English, he said he preferred to forfeit the $75,000 advance he said he had paid Luis Miguel rather than risk $300,000 to $400,000 in losses if the show went ahead. Those amounts are Cabrera’s reported estimates, not independently verified accounting figures. The reports provide no independent ticket-sales totals.

What did the reports say about ticket refunds?
The two People en Español accounts gave slightly different refund timelines, so these should be understood as instructions reported in 2008, not current Ticketmaster or MSG policy.
- The English report said card purchases would be reimbursed in six to seven days and that cash buyers should go to the Madison Square Garden ticket booths.
- The Spanish report said card refunds would take seven to ten days.
Was this the same as Luis Miguel’s 2002 MSG performance?
No. Clarín reported that during a separate Madison Square Garden performance on February 14, 2002, Luis Miguel lost his voice and had to stop after about six songs and 35 minutes. That interruption occurred six years before the disputed 2008 concert reports; it does not establish what happened to the later planned show. Clarín’s report on the 2002 performance.

Yes. Madison Square Garden’s event page and Luis Miguel’s official tour page list a performance at the venue on October 8, 2023. That later appearance is documented, but it does not resolve the conflicting accounts about the 2008 concert. Madison Square Garden’s event listing and Luis Miguel’s tour page.
