ABC News and CNN reported that law-enforcement sources attributed the line “These parasites had it coming” to a handwritten document recovered from Luigi Mangione. A 2026 prosecution filing later quoted the same phrase while describing a letter addressed “to the Feds.” Those reports and the filing support attributing the wording to a document associated with Mangione; they do not, by themselves, authenticate every word in the full manifesto transcription published online.
What was reported about the phrase?
In December 2024, ABC News reported that law-enforcement sources said a handwritten document attributed to Mangione contained the phrase. CNN’s December 10 transcript gives a more specific attribution: correspondent Brian Todd said a police official who had seen the document supplied the wording. CNN rendered it as “These parasites had it coming.”
ABC’s report also described other alleged notebook content and referred to a confidential NYPD intelligence assessment for contextual interpretations. That is reporting based on sources, not a public forensic authentication record. CNN separately quoted NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny as saying, “We don’t think that there’s any specific threats to other people mentioned in that document but it does seem that he has some ill will toward corporate America.” That statement describes the document as Kenny characterized it; it is not proof of authorship.
The shorter wording in the original headline, “Parasites Had It Coming,” is a shortened rendering. The quoted line reported by CNN includes “These.”

What does the later court filing add?
A 2026 prosecution post-hearing submission opposing a motion to suppress refers to a letter addressed “to the Feds” and quotes the phrase. This provides another appearance of the wording in a formal case document, but the filing is the prosecution’s argument—not a judge’s factual finding or an independent authentication of a complete online text. Read the prosecution submission.
Which “manifesto” are people referring to?
Several distinct texts have been discussed online and in reporting. Treating them as one document can make the evidence seem stronger than it is.

Is the full online transcription authenticated?
The public material cited here does not establish a complete chain of custody or forensic authentication of every word in the online transcription. A phrase reported by people who said they saw a document, or repeated in a prosecution submission, may corroborate that the phrase was associated with a document in the case. It does not establish that a longer text published online is complete, exact, or authored by Mangione.
There is also a healthcare-cost and life-expectancy claim attributed to the document in the reporting and online transcription. The cited accounts do not verify those figures against the original statistical publishers, so they should not be treated here as established statistics.

How to describe the claim accurately
- Supported wording: “ABC News and CNN reported that law-enforcement sources attributed the phrase to a handwritten document associated with Mangione.”
- Also supported: “A 2026 prosecution filing quoted the phrase while describing a letter addressed ‘to the Feds.’”
- Not established by these sources: That every word of the full online transcription has been authenticated, or that the prosecution filing amounts to a court finding.
ABC News reported that defense counsel said Mangione would plead not guilty to the charges discussed in its report. The reported document and its wording should therefore remain described as alleged, rather than as independently proven authorship or guilt.
