No credible evidence in the cited coverage established that King Charles III’s protection officers had fake arms. The claim spread through social-media video in September 2022, shortly before Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. Security expert Will Geddes, quoted by The Tab, rejected the idea and said the tactic was not used in the UK. That is expert commentary, not an official police finding.
What did the viral video claim?
The speculation focused on footage of officers protecting King Charles in the period before the funeral. Viewers interpreted one hand as unusually still or rigid and suggested an artificial arm might conceal the officer’s real hand resting on a weapon. They also pointed to different-looking hand positions and an apparent bulge beneath a jacket. Those were viewers’ interpretations of the images, not verified descriptions of the officers’ equipment.
PerthNow reported on 19 September 2022 that the video creator asked, “King Charles’ security. Do some have fake arms, hands on guns?” PerthNow described the video as having close to 16 million views at the time. The New Zealand Herald report carried by Newstalk ZB recorded the wording, “What’s going on with the bodyguard’s hands?” and reported more than 14.2 million views and almost 7,000 comments for one video. Newstalk ZB and 7NEWS also reported the footage’s spread; 7NEWS put its view count above 15 million. These are separate news-outlet snapshots from 2022, not current totals or platform-verified analytics.
What did the security expert say?
The Tab quoted security expert Will Geddes, whom it described as having worked as a bodyguard for nearly three decades. Geddes said: “They definitely aren’t fake hands; I can understand why some people might have thought they were because of what looks like an incredibly tight grip but they definitely aren’t.”

He also said: “It isn’t a tactic that is used at all in the UK, there might be all sorts of other tricks and stunts that security officers use to make sure high-profile individuals are kept safe, but this wouldn’t be one of them.” His comments directly reject the theory, but they remain an expert’s response reported by The Tab, rather than confirmation from police about the particular officers in the footage.
What did Westminster Security say about the funeral?
Westminster Security, a private security provider, also rejects the fake-arms claim. Its account says armed police protection officers surrounded the Royal Family behind the coffin and gun carriage during the funeral procession. This is the company’s description of the arrangement; it is not a police or government statement. Westminster Security’s account does not establish the identities or exact equipment of every officer seen in the viral video.

What is confirmed—and what remains unverified?
The reports establish that the rumor circulated around 19 September 2022, just before Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, and that the apparent hand positions and jacket outline prompted speculation. Geddes rejected the claim, while Westminster Security described armed police protection at the procession. The cited sources do not include an official police statement confirming the identities or precise equipment of the individuals in the video. A visual impression or social-media identification cannot fill that gap.
This is a historical viral-news story, not a current security update. The evidence presented in these reports supports treating “fake arms” as speculation that was rejected by a named security expert—not as an established feature of the King’s protection detail.
