Did Jurassic Park Get Dinosaur Sounds Wrong? What Scientists Can—and Can’t—Tell Us

Jurassic Park’s dinosaur sounds were invented for the film. Fossils and computer models can suggest possible calls for particular species, but cannot provide a definitive recording of how dinosaurs sounded.

Jurassic Park’s dinosaur calls were fictional sound design, not recordings reconstructed from fossils. Scientists can use anatomy and computer models to explore what particular dinosaurs might have sounded like, but no evidence establishes one definitive voice for all dinosaurs.

Were the sounds in Jurassic Park scientifically accurate?

Not as reconstructions of real dinosaur voices. The film’s vocalizations were assembled from animal and mechanical sounds to create memorable effects. Paleontologists interviewed by The Cornell Daily Sun described the sounds as fictional; paleontologist Anderson said, “A lot of that [in Jurassic Park] was fictional.”

That does not mean scientists have since established exactly what dinosaurs sounded like. The movie’s creative sound design and the scientific question are separate: the former is known to be invented, while the latter remains uncertain.

Why can’t fossils tell us exactly what dinosaurs sounded like?

Sound depends on more than the shape of a skull. Soft tissues involved in producing and shaping calls—including vocal structures and parts of the throat—rarely fossilize. Researchers therefore often have to infer how an animal might have made sound from preserved bones, comparisons with living animals, and assumptions about missing anatomy.

That makes conclusions provisional and species-specific. A fossil can provide clues about structures that may have affected sound, but it is not an audio recording, and a result for one dinosaur cannot automatically be applied to another.

What does the Parasaurolophus sound model suggest?

Parasaurolophus is a useful example because its distinctive crest contains internal air passages that researchers can study. In work recounted by Sandia National Laboratories, computer scientist Carl Diegert and paleontologist Tom Williamson used a CT scan to examine the passages, reconstructed their shape computationally, and modeled airflow and resonance.

The modeled result was a low-frequency rumble, potentially with changes in pitch. The researchers also explored alternatives with and without vocal cords because those soft structures were not preserved. Their calculations required assumptions about missing features such as the beak, nostrils, and throat tissues. The result is a model-based possibility, not a recovered call or definitive answer.

How do scientists infer possible dinosaur sounds?

As Cornell paleontologist Anderson put it, “[Scientists] take a CT of the skull and say, if air passes through this structure, what does it sound like?” CT imaging and comparative anatomy can help researchers examine internal passages and model how air might move through them. Such work can suggest possible sounds or echoes under particular assumptions; it cannot restore the animal’s unpreserved soft tissues or establish a single authentic call from skull geometry alone.

Evidence or method What it can contribute What it cannot establish
Preserved fossil anatomy Clues about the shape of bones and other structures that may have affected sound. The full vocal system when relevant soft tissues did not fossilize.
Comparisons with living animals A basis for considering how anatomy might function. A direct match between a living animal’s voice and a dinosaur’s call.
Computer modeling of airflow and resonance Possible sounds produced by a modeled structure under stated assumptions. A recording of the animal or proof that it made that sound.

Does this mean dinosaurs did not roar?

It does not establish a blanket rule either way. Claims that dinosaurs generally did—or did not—roar go beyond what these examples support. The responsible answer is narrower: researchers can investigate possible vocalizations for particular species, but the evidence is incomplete and does not settle the sound of every dinosaur.

NHPR’s “Outside/In” episode on what Jurassic Park got wrong and right offers additional context about the film and dinosaurs. Its further-reading list includes Smithsonian’s The Dinosaur Book, a general dinosaur book rather than a specialist guide to acoustics.
