No confirmed purchase has been established. In April 2024, Italian news reports said Johnny Depp had reportedly looked at Montalto Dora Castle in northern Italy while he was in Turin working on a film. The reported €4.8 million figure was an asking price, not a sale price, and a source close to Depp said the potential deal was “nothing is confirmed or official.”
What was reported about Johnny Depp and the castle?
On April 14, 2024, Corriere della Sera reported that Depp had apparently visited the Montalto Dora area while in Turin working on a film about artist Amedeo Modigliani. The paper described a possible interest in the castle as a rumor; its report did not establish that Depp made an offer or bought the property.
Fox Business reported on April 21 that a source close to Depp said “nothing is confirmed or official.” That was the source’s characterization of the potential sale, not a statement from Depp. Fox Business also said Depp’s representatives declined to comment.
Where is Montalto Dora Castle, and what was it listed for?
Montalto Dora Castle is in the Canavese area of Piedmont, northern Italy. Corriere described it as a hilltop property on Monte Crovero overlooking the Parco dei Cinque Laghi di Ivrea. Its April 14 report listed more than 2,000 square meters, 11 rooms, 13 bathrooms, and a 15th-century chapel.

Corriere reported an asking price of €4.8 million. Architectural Digest Italia relayed the listing agent’s figure of €4.85 million. These are reported asking-price figures, not evidence of a completed sale or its price.
Why did the mayor raise questions about the castle’s future?
In an April 15 follow-up, Corriere reported that Montalto Dora Mayor Renzo Galletto favored uses that could serve the community, including exhibitions, conferences, and cultural initiatives. The castle had previously been used as a film and television location, for occasional events, and for private event rentals.

Fox Business reported that Galletto described the property as protected by Italian cultural heritage rules and said planning changes would require approvals. He also cautioned that celebrity attention alone would not settle whether a purchase would benefit the area. Those comments describe the mayor’s position; they are not a detailed determination of the property’s legal status or permitted uses.

No. A rumored property interest is not evidence of a career revival. As of June 2026, Folha described Depp’s recent directing work on Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness and said his upcoming role in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol could mark a return to Hollywood. Depp’s official website lists Ebenezer for November 13, 2026, and Day Drinker for March 26, 2027.
