There is no verified evidence that Joe Biden farted while speaking with Camilla at COP26. The November 2021 story traced to one anonymous source quoted by the Mail on Sunday. Contemporary coverage described the allegation as unproven; it did not establish that the incident happened.
What was the allegation?
The story placed the alleged incident at a reception for COP26’s opening night on November 1, 2021, at Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow. The Independent reported that the Mail on Sunday had quoted an unnamed source describing the alleged noise as “long and loud and impossible to ignore” and saying Camilla “hasn’t stopped talking about it.” Those are claims attributed to an anonymous source, not independently verified observations. The Independent’s November 7, 2021 report also said Clarence House declined to comment when approached.

What evidence supports it?
The available reporting establishes that the allegation circulated, but not that it was true. It rests on a single anonymous-source quotation; the contemporaneous coverage reviewed provides no independent confirmation or direct recording. Clarence House’s reported decision not to comment is neither confirmation nor denial.
On November 10, 2021, Pedestrian quoted Snopes writer Dan Evon saying, “We can’t confirm or debunk whether Biden truly farted while meeting with the Duchess of Cornwall.” Evon added that the evidence was scarce and based entirely on one anonymous-source quote. Pedestrian’s account of Snopes’ assessment therefore characterizes the claim as unproven, not as a confirmed event or a disproven one.

Why did people call it “fartgate”?
The Independent reported that the allegation spread online under the label “fartgate.” That label describes the internet reaction; repetition and attention do not provide additional evidence for the claim.

- November 1, 2021: Contemporary reports placed the alleged exchange at the opening-night reception at Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow.
- November 2, 2021: Biden held a press conference at COP26, as recorded in Roll Call’s Factba.se transcript. This confirms his summit activity, not the alleged incident.
- November 7–10, 2021: The Independent and other outlets reported the allegation; Pedestrian subsequently quoted Snopes’ assessment that it could not be confirmed or debunked.
What can responsibly be concluded?
There was a real news story about the allegation, and it was tied to a COP26 reception in Glasgow. But the reported account depends on one unnamed source, and the fact-check coverage said it could not verify the claim. It is therefore not established that Biden farted, or that Camilla reacted as the source reportedly claimed.
