Yes. Jim Caviezel learned Aramaic to perform his role as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ (2004). He said he worked on the language throughout production, alongside old Hebrew and Latin. The evidence supports preparation to deliver the film’s scripted dialogue; it does not establish that he became conversationally fluent.
What did Caviezel say about learning Aramaic?
In a 2004 interview with Rush Limbaugh, Caviezel was asked how long the language work took. He answered: “Actually, throughout the whole film. I worked on the Aramaic and then the old Hebrew and Latin, so there were three languages for me.” Read the interview.

A contemporaneous profile in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin also reported that Caviezel had to learn Aramaic for the role. The reporter heard him recite Aramaic dialogue and proverbs, and the article quoted him saying, “I’ll never forget any of the Aramaic I spoke in this film.” Read the profile.
How did he prepare the lines?
Language consultant William Fulco described coaching the cast on what they said. He provided phonetic transcriptions, with exact translations beneath them, so actors could learn how to pronounce and understand their lines. Read Fulco’s account.

That distinction matters: learning lines with pronunciation guidance and coaching is not the same as demonstrating broad conversational ability. Caviezel’s own account and the contemporary reporting establish that he studied and performed Aramaic for the film, not that he reached general fluency.
Did he know Aramaic before the film?
A separate 2004 CBN account reports that Caviezel said he knew nothing about Aramaic before the production and that learning the film’s three languages concerned him. Read CBN’s report.
