Jennifer Lopez played Selena on screen and lip-synced to recordings of Selena’s voice. For scenes portraying Selena as a child, a contemporary 1997 report identifies Jennifer Peña as the singing voice.
Whose voice do you hear in Selena?
The movie separates the actor seen performing from the voice on the recording. Edward James Olmos, who played Selena’s father, later recalled that Lopez lip-synced during studio scenes, adding that it looked convincing. He also noted that the film used Selena’s voice. The Library of Congress interview records Olmos’s recollection.

Lopez likewise said in an interview conducted during filming and published by Entertainment Tonight in 2017 that the movie used recordings of Selena’s songs. “I’m not a singer,” she said at the time, describing herself as a dancer. Entertainment Tonight’s interview provides her account.
Who sang for young Selena?
A contemporary report published by The Spokesman-Review on February 12, 1997, says Jennifer Peña supplied the singing voice for the scenes with young Selena. Peña was then a 12-year-old vocalist with Jennifer y Los Jetz. The report explains that clean recordings of Selena singing as a child were unavailable, so Peña’s voice was used for that portrayal. Why the distinction matters
“Did Lopez sing?” can mean either that she appears to sing on screen or that her voice is on the recording. She performs Selena’s songs in the film’s scenes, but the available accounts identify Selena’s recordings—not Lopez’s voice—as the featured vocals for the adult performances. For the childhood scenes, the contemporary report names Peña. A March 1997 Washington Post review also describes Lopez lip-syncing to Selena’s voice. Read the review.
The evidence establishes who provided the featured Selena vocals; it does not establish whether Lopez contributed a brief vocal elsewhere in the film. Claims that she sang a particular short intro are not confirmed by the cited accounts.
