It is possible to ask whether J.D. Madison’s reported legal troubles affected his time on Southern Charm, but the available reporting does not establish that they caused him to leave. The record includes a commercial rent dispute involving his bar, reports of allegations and a police investigation, and a later charge against the accuser. None of the cited sources confirms a departure date or gives a verified production explanation.
What is known about J.D. Madison’s reported legal issues?
The reports concern two distinct matters: a landlord’s claim over rent for The Gentry Bar & Room, and allegations that prompted a police investigation. They should not be treated as one case or as proof of a reason for Madison’s reduced or absent presence on the show.
The Gentry Bar & Room rent dispute
In September 2017, the Charleston City Paper reported that 276 King St., LLC, the landlord, claimed Madison owed $163,233 in unpaid rent connected with The Gentry Bar & Room. The amount was the landlord’s reported claim, not a final court judgment established by that article.
The same report said a magistrate judge had approved an earlier eviction agreement requiring Madison to pay $144,844.52 in past-due rent by August 25, 2017. Madison said settlement funds were in an attorney’s escrow account and that he intended to find the bar a new location. The landlord’s representative described missed deadlines and nonpayment differently. Madison said, “We worked, in good faith, to resolve the property, lease, and rent issues with the landlord over the past six months.” Mark Regalbuto, identified as a local business partner for Jenel Management Corporation, responded: “The order of the eviction speaks for itself.” These are competing accounts of a business tenancy; the report does not establish personal criminal conduct.

Allegations, investigation, and charge against the accuser
E! News reported that police investigated allegations made against Madison in 2018. In February 2019, E! reported that Susan Johnson had been charged with filing a false felony police report. Her attorney, Trey Harrell, said: “My client is innocent of this charge and intends to defend herself vigorously in court.”
A charge against Johnson does not by itself prove that the earlier allegation was false. E!’s article includes her attorney’s denial and stated intention to contest the charge, and the cited reporting does not establish a final outcome for the matter.

What did the show and the people involved say?
In April 2018, Bravo covered a Southern Charm storyline in which Naomie Olindo raised rumors and criticized Madison. Elizabeth Madison disputed the claims and defended her husband. Bravo’s coverage presents opposing statements and an on-show dispute, not adjudicated findings. See Elizabeth Madison’s response and Naomie Olindo’s explanation.
Madison separately discussed his marriage in a Bravo interview about his separation from Elizabeth. He attributed it to accumulated relationship problems, including lifestyle differences, work pressure, stress, and the demands of marriage, rather than a single triggering event. He said “there wasn’t really a ‘last straw’ fight or an event that led” to their separation. That explanation concerns the marriage, not his status on the show. Bravo published the interview on April 20, 2018: Madison on the separation.

Do the reports show why Madison left Southern Charm?
No. The cited reports do not confirm that legal issues caused Madison to leave, identify a definitive departure date, or provide a verified explanation from Bravo or the show’s production. The rent dispute, the police investigation and charge, and the televised relationship conflict are separate pieces of context; linking any of them to a departure as the cause would go beyond what these sources establish.
The coverage is also dated: the rent story appeared in 2017, and the reports about the allegations, charge, and relationship aired or appeared in 2018 and 2019. Those articles do not establish later legal outcomes or a formal departure announcement. The most accurate conclusion is that legal issues may be part of the speculation about Madison’s absence, but the cited record does not prove that they were the reason.
