The “curse” was not literal or an official WWE designation: it referred to a reported gap in Japanese WWE Superstars’ main-card match wins.
How IYO SKY won at WrestleMania 41
SKY entered WrestleMania 41 as WWE Women’s Champion and defended the title in a triple threat against Bianca Belair and Rhea Ripley. WWE’s official results recap says SKY hit Belair with her Over the Moonsault and pinned her to retain. In a triple threat, the champion did not need to pin Ripley to keep the title.
WWE’s profile lists SKY’s hometown as Tokyo, Japan and Over The Moonsault as her signature move.
What the WrestleMania “curse” refers to
Wrestlezone reported on April 20, 2025, that SKY was the first Japanese woman to win a match at WrestleMania. It also described her victory as the first WrestleMania main-card match win by a Japanese WWE Superstar in 27 years, attributing that observation to Shinsuke Nakamura. Wrestlezone identified Taka Michinoku’s win at WrestleMania XIV as the previous main-card victory and distinguished Yoshi Tatsu’s WrestleMania XXVI pre-show dark-match battle royal.

Those are reported historical claims, not a formal WWE “curse” or an official designation. The 27-year interval and first-ever framing should therefore be understood as Wrestlezone’s account, rather than as a record independently confirmed here against a complete official match-history ledger. The phrase “broke the curse” is colorful shorthand for that reported drought.
Why the WrestleMania 41 result matters
The result joined a title defense to a milestone in the way Japanese wrestlers’ WrestleMania history was being discussed. SKY’s win was decisive in the match itself—she retained by pinning Belair—and the historical significance comes from the reported gap, not from any special WWE rule or recognized superstition.

Keep the WrestleMania dates straight
SKY’s victory was at WrestleMania 41 on April 20, 2025. WrestleMania 42 was a separate event in 2026; WWE’s WrestleMania 42 results page covers that later show, not SKY’s 2025 title defense.
