The available accounts do not establish that he did. Contemporary reports describe his hair’s distinctive upright styling, but they do not say whether it was natural or a hairpiece. A 1988 mention of “King-style wigs” refers to people copying his look—not to King wearing one.

His hair became part of his public image
A 1986 Los Angeles Times column by Jim Murray described King’s hair as soaring upward and treated the look as more than a trademark or unique characteristic. The column presents the hairstyle as central to King’s persona, but does not say he wore a wig. The Los Angeles Times column
What “King-style wigs” means
A 1988 Los Angeles Times report by James Bates says attendees at a television-industry convention lined up to put on “King-style wigs” and pose for photographs with King. In context, the wigs were imitations worn by other people. The report does not identify King’s own hair as a wig. The Los Angeles Times report

What a later photograph caption can—and cannot—show
A Getty Images caption describes a 2003 press conference at which King held a manipulated photograph of himself with a buzz haircut. The image was connected to a challenge from Roy Jones Jr.: King would cut his famous hair if Jones’s fighter lost. The episode shows that King’s hair was publicly treated as part of his own recognizable look, but a caption cannot establish whether it was natural or a hairpiece. Getty Images caption
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the evidence settle the question?
No. The cited accounts document King’s striking hairstyle and other people’s imitation wigs, but none directly confirms whether King himself wore a wig. It is therefore more accurate to say that the available evidence does not establish that he did than to claim definitively that his hair was natural.

For background on King’s life and career, Jack Newfield’s 1995 biography, Only in America: The Life and Crimes of Don King, is listed by Encyclopedia.com as an informative biography. That reference does not, by itself, resolve the wig question. Encyclopedia.com biography entry
