Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has set major box-office records, but the available figures do not establish that it surpassed Avengers: Endgame internationally. The confusion comes from mixing regional and genre records with an all-time international comparison—and from totals reported on different dates.
Which Demon Slayer movie is the claim about?
The film is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, the first installment in the franchise’s Infinity Castle film trilogy. It opened in Japan in July 2025 before its international rollout. Crunchyroll reported on September 23, 2025, that it had made more than $555 million worldwide, including about $229.85 million in Japan and $269 million in Crunchyroll/Sony markets. That was an interim report, not a final lifetime total. Crunchyroll’s September 2025 report described it as the highest-grossing anime and Japanese film worldwide at that time.
Why the records do not prove it beat Endgame internationally
Box-office records are category-specific. Infinity Castle also set a North American record as the highest-grossing international film in that market, as reported by Crunchyroll in April 2026. “International film in North America” means a film originating outside North America that earns money in North America; it does not mean the film’s international gross across all territories. Neither that record nor a record for anime or Japanese films establishes an all-time international-box-office victory over Endgame.
“Worldwide” and “international” are not interchangeable. Worldwide gross includes a film’s domestic market plus other territories. International gross generally excludes the domestic market, though databases and studio reports may differ in how they define territories. Comparing films requires matching the category, territory definition, reporting date, and currency-conversion method.

What the dated figures show
| Film and report | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Infinity Castle, September 23, 2025 | More than $555 million worldwide | Crunchyroll’s interim total, including reported Japan and Crunchyroll/Sony market figures; not a final lifetime gross. Source |
| Infinity Castle, after its North American opening weekend in 2025 | $177.8 million global; $70 million North American debut | Comscore estimates reported by the Associated Press at that early point in the release. Source |
| Infinity Castle, Japan through April 9, 2026 | 40.2 billion yen; 27,455,968 tickets | Japanese box-office and admissions figures reported by Crunchyroll from Toho and the official Demon Slayer account. Source |
| Infinity Castle, accessed October 8, 2026 | $656,643,738 international | Box Office Mojo’s changing third-party tracker listing; it represents 82.7% of its listed gross and is not a studio final statement. Source |
| Avengers: Endgame, October 5, 2026 | All-time worldwide record reclaimed after Encore rerelease | Marvel Japan’s announcement, which attributes box-office figures to Box Office Mojo and uses 157 yen per US dollar for conversion. It is a worldwide-record statement, not a harmonized international-gross comparison with Infinity Castle. Source |
These snapshots track different stages of Infinity Castle’s rollout and use different reporting contexts. Its international listing is a tracker figure, while Marvel Japan’s 2026 announcement concerns Endgame’s worldwide record after rerelease. They should not be combined into a precise head-to-head margin.
What can be said about Endgame’s record?
Marvel Japan said on October 5, 2026, that Avengers: Endgame had reclaimed the all-time worldwide box-office record following its Encore rerelease. That update makes the claim that Infinity Castle “officially surpassed” Endgame especially misleading if it is presented as a worldwide record. The available dated figures do not provide a matched, same-source comparison of the films’ international grosses under one territory definition, so they do not support a definitive international winner.

What Infinity Castle did achieve
The distinction does not diminish the film’s scale. It became a landmark for anime and Japanese cinema worldwide, drew an unusually large audience in Japan, and set a notable North American record for an international film. Those are meaningful achievements in their own categories; they are simply different from topping the all-time international chart.
Box-office gross is the amount earned from ticket sales, not a studio’s profit or the amount ultimately received by a distributor. Release patterns, rereleases, ticket prices, and currency conversions affect comparisons, which is why a record should always be tied to its category and reporting date.
