Available accounts of David Letterman’s final Late Show do not substantiate a moment in which he called out a Donald Trump lie. They describe applause for Letterman’s entrance and farewell, but report no Trump appearance or such exchange. The precise incident behind the headline remains unidentified.
What happened on Letterman’s final Late Show?
Letterman’s final CBS Late Show aired May 20, 2015. Contemporary reports describe a farewell built around presidential tributes, a celebrity Top 10 list, thanks to his family and colleagues, and a closing performance by Foo Fighters.
The opening revisited Gerald Ford’s “Our long national nightmare is over” line, then moved through footage of four former presidents. Barack Obama delivered the final message: Letterman was retiring. Letterman then entered to applause and chants of “Dave!” Emily Yahr’s Washington Post recap describes the response as “massive applause”; the Los Angeles Times report likewise describes thunderous applause and an audience on its feet.
For the final Top 10, celebrity guests including Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Peyton Manning, Tina Fey and Barbara Walters read entries. Bill Murray delivered the last one. Letterman thanked his family and colleagues before the Foo Fighters performed “Everlong.”

In a LateNighter oral history, Letterman’s final words are quoted as: “That is pretty much all I got. The only thing I have left to do for the last time on a television program: Thank you and goodnight.”
Why did the audience applaud?
The reported applause was for Letterman’s entrance and farewell. The contemporary accounts describe an audience celebrating the end of his run; they do not connect that reaction to a correction of Trump or any other political claim. Applause alone cannot establish what an audience believed about a particular statement.

Did Trump appear or get called out during the finale?
The available contemporary reports do not document Trump appearing in the May 20, 2015 broadcast, nor do they describe Letterman calling out a Trump lie. The retrospective oral history adds detail about the finale and its closing words but does not supply the alleged exchange. These sources do not prove that no such moment could have occurred; they do not substantiate the claim.
A fan-maintained episode guide lists Trump as a guest on Letterman’s show on October 25, 2012. That listing is not a transcript and does not establish what was said. It is a separate, earlier appearance—not evidence that Trump was part of Letterman’s 2015 finale. The episode guide should be treated only as a lead for archival verification.

How to assess the headline’s claim
The headline wording appeared as a heading on a TheThings page, but its visible content does not provide evidence for the moment it asserts. A headline is not a transcript or a primary source.
To verify the specific allegation, a dated recording or transcript showing Letterman’s words and the audience response would be needed. Without that, it is more accurate to distinguish the documented finale from the unverified Trump-related claim than to present the callout as something that happened.
