Manchester United loaned David Beckham to Preston North End in 1995. A decade later, a Preston supporter’s blog post turned that connection into a joke about the club teaching Beckham everything: “Look at him now.” The loan is documented; the boast is humorous local pride, not an established account of his development.
Did David Beckham play for Preston North End?
Yes. Manchester United’s account of Sir Alex Ferguson’s recollections says Beckham was loaned to Preston North End in 1995. Ferguson recalled: “I put [David] Beckham out on loan at Preston [North End, in 1995] and he thought I was trying to get rid of him, which was not true.” Manchester United’s account supports the loan and Ferguson’s explanation of his intent.

What does “We taught him everything. Look at him now” mean?
The line comes from “The Hissing Of Summer Lawns,” a 25 July 2005 post on A Free Man In Preston. Its author, writing as a Preston supporter, presents the boast as something a North End fan named Rex says and returns to the point that Beckham played for Preston: “David Beckham played for Preston, you know. Did you know that?” The punchline follows: “We taught him everything. Look at him now.” Read the original post.
What the joke does—and does not—establish
The joke works because a documented loan gives Preston supporters a real link to a player who became internationally famous. But the blog post is a humorous account of local pride, not an independent record of Beckham’s training or development. Manchester United’s account confirms the loan; it does not substantiate the claim that Preston taught him everything. Neither cited source gives Beckham’s Preston appearance or goal totals, so those figures cannot be established from these accounts.
