In a July 2024 interview with Chris Van Vliet, he praised the series and Antony Starr’s performance while drawing a clear line between the fan comparison and his stated design inspiration.
What did Cody Rhodes say about Homelander?
In the July 2024 Insight with Chris Van Vliet interview, Rhodes said, “With all the love I have for ‘The Boys,’ and [Antony Starr’s] performance as Homelander — the entire cast — and their production is first class, … the robe is not based on it.” He added: “The robe is based on military dress uniforms.” Wrestling Inc. published coverage of the interview on July 16, 2024, and credited the original interview, with a hat tip for its transcription: Wrestling Inc.
Rhodes also separated his admiration for the show from his view of its central character: “Truthfully, Homelander the character is a terrible human being.” His remarks were a clarification of the robe’s inspiration, not an announcement about WWE’s plans for his character.
Why do fans compare Rhodes to Homelander?
The comparison combines a visual resemblance fans noticed in Rhodes’s gear with a story about how audiences interpret a wrestler’s character. Rhodes said the parallel became especially prominent during his AEW run, when some viewers wondered whether his good-guy presentation might conceal a villainous side. That is a fan reading of the character and look; it does not establish that he designed the robe to imitate Homelander.

What did Rhodes say about the comparison in 2022?
In a January 5, 2022 interview with ComicBook.com, Rhodes said fans could interpret the parallel as they wished. He said his gear designer, Sandra Gray, had worked with him since his Dashing Cody Rhodes period and did not know about Homelander. He acknowledged that the jacket had become linked with the character in fans’ minds, adding, “I never want to ruin it for anybody. I never judge our fans or hold them accountable. They pay their money. They can do whatever they’d like.” ComicBook.com’s interview provides the earlier context.
Did the comments confirm a heel turn?
No. In the same 2024 interview coverage, Rhodes discussed calls from fans for him to turn heel and the need for WWE to judge whether those calls reflected the wider audience or a vocal minority. Those comments describe how to interpret audience reaction; they do not confirm a planned turn.
