Yes—Billy Corgan said he paid a hacker out of his own pocket to stop songs from the Smashing Pumpkins’ 2023 album ATUM from leaking. In an interview discussed during the album’s May 2023 release, Corgan said nine tracks had been taken before release and that the effort prevented the leak. The hacker’s identity and the amount paid were not disclosed in the contemporaneous reports.
What did Billy Corgan say happened?
Corgan described the incident in an interview with the Klein/Ally Show, reported by Dark Reading on May 11, 2023 and covered contemporaneously by Audacy/KROQ and CBS Chicago.
According to Corgan, a fan alerted him that nine songs had leaked. He placed the warning roughly six months before the interview and described the tracks as among the album’s catchiest or most single-like songs. He said the files had been taken from ATUM before release and that someone was offering them for money.
Corgan said he paid personally and that the effort stopped the leak. In the words Dark Reading reproduced from the interview: “What we were able to do was stop the leak from happening.”
