The claim that Bill Murray stopped a scene in Charlie’s Angels to tell Lucy Liu she “couldn’t act” is not established by the available accounts. Liu reportedly described a disagreement over how a scene should be played; Murray’s reported explanation focused on lines he thought were implausible and on Liu taking his criticism personally. The exact words and sequence remain uncertain.
What happened on the set of Charlie’s Angels?
The dispute involved the 2000 film Charlie’s Angels, which starred Liu alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, with Murray also appearing in the film. A retrospective by Sophie McEvoy in The List, published August 1, 2021, recounts differing descriptions of an on-set disagreement. It quotes Liu through a 2000 TV Guide interview and relays Murray’s later explanation; it is not a primary account of the incident.
The headline version—that Murray stopped mid-scene and told Liu she did not know how to act—should therefore be treated as an allegation, not a verified quotation. The cited retrospective does not establish that he used those exact words.
How Liu described the disagreement
In the 2000 interview as quoted by The List, Liu rejected the idea that the exchange was an argument and framed it as a difference in how they understood a scene:

Those comments support a dispute over interpretation, but they do not confirm the exact “you can’t act” wording or a precise sequence of events.
How Murray’s reported account differs
The List relays Murray’s explanation rather than supplying a verified transcript of his original interview. In that account, he objected to lines he considered implausible or “so crazy,” and said Liu became angry because she thought his criticism was a personal assault. He also believed she disliked the lines. This presents the exchange as a disagreement about the writing and the way his comments were received, rather than confirming that he told Liu she could not act.

Did Liu swing at Murray?
Liu rejected the rumor that she swung at him. In the 2000 interview as quoted by The List, she said: “And then the rumors started going crazy that I swung at him. This guy is like 6’2”. I wasn’t going to pull out kung fu on him.” Her denial is part of her account; the retrospective does not independently establish every detail of the encounter.

The List reports later comments indicating that Liu and Murray made peace. It also reports Murray attributing his absence from the sequel to another cast member, whom he did not name. That explanation does not identify the person or establish further details about his decision.
