He said he was not surprised by Jimmy Kimmel’s public evolution—but explicitly did not accuse Kimmel of being insincere. That is Carolla’s interpretation of Kimmel’s public role, not evidence that hosting changed Kimmel’s private personality.

“If you host a popular, late-night show in Hollywood you’ve gotta get guests. If you started talking about Trump in a positive way and anti-vax this or that, it would be very injurious to your show.”
Carolla added that he was not claiming Kimmel adopted views simply to secure bookings: “I’m not saying he’s doing it to get bookings… Hollywood leans in a direction, and if you’re gonna navigate Hollywood, and you’re really a part of it, your politics are gonna come out a certain way.” These are Carolla’s views as quoted in OutKick’s report, not a demonstrated account of Kimmel’s motives.

What did Kimmel say about changing how he speaks?
A 2017 interview with The New York Times, republished by The Independent, offers Kimmel’s own perspective on the effect of politically salient events and monologues. He said: “It does make you think a little bit more about what you say and maybe you choose your words a bit more carefully.”
That comment describes greater care in public expression. It does not establish a change in private personality, nor does it confirm Carolla’s explanation about Hollywood incentives. The 2017 interview also shows that Kimmel was asked whether he remained close to Carolla and their former Man Show colleague Daniel Kellison.

- Public expression: Carolla offered an explanation for what he saw as Kimmel’s political evolution; Kimmel said in 2017 that events could make him choose his words more carefully.
- Hosting pressures: Carolla pointed to guest booking and Hollywood’s prevailing political climate. The cited reporting presents this as his interpretation, not an independently established causal finding.
- Private personality: Neither account demonstrates that Kimmel’s underlying personality changed because he became a talk-show host.
- Friendship: Kimmel said in 2017, “To this day, they’re two of my best friends,” referring to Carolla and Kellison. That is a dated first-person statement, not confirmation of their current private relationship.
A 2026 Fox News account of Carolla’s recollection adds background to their long professional history: Carolla said they met through boxing lessons at KROQ, and that Kimmel encouraged him to pursue comedy. Carolla recalled, “He wasn’t a good boxer, but he was a good comedian, and he was the first guy in my entire life to ever go, ‘You are funny, man. You should be doing this,’” Fox News reported. That account provides context for their friendship and collaboration, but it does not establish that hosting transformed Kimmel’s personality.
