He said that if “GO” reached one million, he would step out of the band for good. That was Pineda’s conditional offer—not a formal vote giving fans authority over Journey’s membership.
What prompted Pineda’s offer?
Journey performed at Rock in Rio in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Contemporary reports focused on video of Pineda singing “Don’t Stop Believin’,” describing him as struggling to reach some high notes. Pineda acknowledged the criticism and said it had affected him. Louder’s September 22, 2024 report reproduced his response; GMA News Online’s September 23 report also covered the Brazil performance and the reaction.

In the post, as reproduced by Louder, Pineda said he felt devastated by the criticism and wrote that he had suffered mentally and emotionally. He then asked people—particularly those who had disliked him—to respond “GO” or “STAY.”
What did “GO” and “STAY” mean?
Pineda set a threshold: if “GO” reached one million, he said he would “step out for good.” The million was a condition he named, not a verified count of people who voted. Coverage from the time described “STAY” responses as substantially ahead, but that was only a contemporaneous snapshot. The sources cited here do not establish a final tally or a later outcome. Louder reported the offer and its snapshot; NME’s September 2024 coverage also described the conditional offer.

Was it a formal vote to remove him from Journey?
No formal band vote or established process giving fans the power to decide Journey membership is described in the available coverage. “Fans can vote him out” is headline shorthand for Pineda’s personal, public offer: he invited replies and said he would leave if the specified threshold was reached. It should not be mistaken for a decision by Journey or a verified referendum. The distinction is also reflected in NME’s report.
