Did Akbar Invent the Modern Bengali Calendar? The History Behind Bengali New Year

Akbar’s administration reshaped Bengali calendar practice around the harvest, but the calendar’s origins may predate his reign. Regional standards also explain why Pohela Boishakh can fall on different dates in Bangladesh and India.

Akbar’s reign is central to the story of the Bengali calendar in its present form, but saying he invented Bengali calendrical traditions from nothing goes beyond the evidence. A modern historical account describes an Akbar-era reform that joined lunar Hijri year-counting with solar calendrical practice to better align revenue collection with the harvest. The calendar’s earlier origins remain uncertain.

What did Akbar change?

According to the Indian Express account, Akbar asked royal astronomer Amir Fatehullah Shirazi to formulate a calendar combining the lunar Hijri system with solar calendar practice. The aim was to make the timing of revenue collection fit seasonal agriculture: a lunar calendar did not remain aligned with the harvest cycle. The newspaper says the resulting calendar was called fasholi shan, or “harvest calendar.”

In this account, the reform retained Sanskrit names for the months while its year count began with Hijri 963, corresponding to 1556 CE, the year of Akbar’s accession. These details are reported through a modern historical reference, The Historical Dictionary of the Bengalis by Kunal and Shubhra Chakrabarti, rather than demonstrated here through contemporary Mughal records. They support describing Akbar’s administration as reshaping calendar practice for governance—not as creating Bengali calendar traditions from scratch.

Did the Bengali calendar begin with Akbar?

Its earliest beginnings are not settled. The Indian Express notes that some historians attribute Bangabda, the Bengali era, to King Shashanka, who reigned from 590 to 625 CE, but says there is no contemporary evidence directly supporting that attribution. The available account therefore leaves room for earlier calendar traditions while identifying the Akbar-era reform as a key point in the calendar’s later development.

Why Bangladesh and India can celebrate on different dates

The calendar in use today is not identical everywhere. In Bangladesh, a Bangla Academy committee headed by Muhammad Shahidullah was appointed in 1966 to make the calendar more precise; Bangladesh adopted the revised standard in 1987, according to the Indian Express. That adoption did not change the Bengali calendar used in West Bengal and elsewhere in India.

Where Calendar standard Pohela Boishakh in the Gregorian calendar
Bangladesh Revised standard adopted in 1987 April 14
West Bengal and elsewhere in India Calendar practice not changed by Bangladesh’s 1987 adoption April 14 or 15

The Bangladesh Tourism Board describes Pahela Baishakh as the first day of Boishakh and says it falls almost always on or about April 14. The date difference is a matter of which regional calendar standard is followed, not a single date that applies everywhere.

What is Pahela Baishakh?

Pahela Baishakh—also written Pohela Boishakh—is Bengali New Year, the first day of the month of Boishakh. In Bangladesh it is a public holiday marked by cultural programs, traditional food, fairs, processions and family gatherings, according to the Bangladesh Tourism Board. The customary greeting is “Shubho Noboborsho,” meaning “Happy New Year.”

Mangal Shobhajatra

In Bangladesh, Mangal Shobhajatra is part of the New Year observance. The Bangladesh Tourism Board says the procession, organized by the University of Dhaka Faculty of Fine Arts, was declared a cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 2016.
