“Warning shots” was the defense’s explanation of what happened—not a finding by the jury about the weapon or Rocky’s motive. At the 2025 Los Angeles trial, defense witness A$AP Twelvyy testified that Rocky used a prop starter pistol to deter Terell Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli, from attacking A$AP Illz. Prosecutors challenged that account. The jury found Rocky not guilty of two felony assault counts on February 18, 2025.
What did A$AP Rocky’s defense claim?
Jamel Phillips, the rapper known as A$AP Twelvyy, testified for the defense that Rocky carried a prop starter pistol. The Associated Press quoted him saying, “He walked around with a prop, like a starter pistol.” Twelvyy said Rocky fired it during the confrontation to discourage Ephron from attacking Illz.
On cross-examination, a prosecutor challenged how a sound from a gun known to be fake could deter someone. Asked how it would work, Twelvyy answered, “The sound,” according to the Associated Press trial report. That exchange presented the defense’s rationale and the prosecution’s challenge; it did not establish the weapon’s nature or the purpose of the shots as an uncontested fact.
How did the prosecution and defense accounts differ?
The accounts conflicted over the weapon, who escalated the confrontation, why shots were fired, and whether Ephron was injured. The claims below are allegations, testimony, and trial arguments—not independent findings about what occurred.

What was Rocky charged with, and what was the verdict?
The case arose from a November 6, 2021 altercation in Hollywood between Rocky and Ephron, a former friend also known as A$AP Relli. Prosecutors brought two felony assault counts. On February 18, 2025, a Los Angeles jury found Rocky not guilty of both, as Reuters reported.
The acquittal resolves those criminal charges. It does not, by itself, establish every detail of either side’s account of the encounter. After the verdict, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said, “Our office remains committed to seeking accountability for those who break the law, no matter their status or influence,” according to Reuters.

Was there a separate civil case?
Yes. Ephron’s civil lawsuit was separate from the criminal prosecution. A post-verdict report said a judge set January 12, 2026, as the civil trial date. That date is a historical scheduling report, not confirmation that the trial took place or that the case remains pending. Rolling Stone Australia reported the scheduling information.
