“The funniest thing is, it’s not enough,” Dick Van Dyke said in an ABC News interview ahead of his 100th birthday. “A hundred years is not enough. You want to live more, which I plan to.” Van Dyke turned 100 on December 13, 2025, and delivered the line with the playful optimism that has become part of his public persona.
What Dick Van Dyke said about turning 100
Van Dyke spoke with ABC News correspondent Chris Connelly at his Malibu home. ABC News published the interview on December 12, 2025; the Associated Press quoted his remarks in its birthday report the next day. His comment was a personal reflection on reaching a century—not a prediction about his lifespan or a formula for living longer.
He also reflected on the way he had played older characters: “You know, I played old men a lot, and I always played them as angry and cantankerous.” He added, “It’s not really that way. I don’t know any other 100-year-olds, but I can speak for myself.”
A century in a career on stage and screen
Born in 1925, Van Dyke built a career across television, film, Broadway and music. The Associated Press reports that The Dick Van Dyke Show ran from 1961 to 1966. He played Bert in the 1964 film Mary Poppins, and starred in Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway and in its 1963 film adaptation. The AP’s 2025 birthday report credits him with a Tony Award, a Grammy, four Primetime Emmy Awards and a 2024 Daytime Emmy for a guest role on Days of Our Lives.

What he said about exercise and aging
In the ABC News interview, Van Dyke said that he and his wife go to the gym three days a week. He described himself as lucky not to have aches or pain at the time of the interview. Those are accounts of his own routine and experience, not evidence that exercise caused him to reach 100 or that following the same routine can guarantee a particular lifespan.

The book behind his advice for younger generations
Van Dyke discussed his book, 100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life, explaining why he wanted to write it: “Well, I had a few more things I wanted to say. I wanted to pass down some of my wisdom to the younger generations.” His remarks framed the book as a way to share perspective, rather than a promise that readers can reproduce his longevity.
