Who were Diane Ladd’s husbands?
| Husband | Marriage | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Bruce Dern | 1960–1969 | Actor; father of Ladd’s daughters Diane Elizabeth and Laura. |
| William Shea Jr. | 1969–1977 | Stockbroker; the marriage ended in divorce. |
| Robert Charles Hunter | Married in 1999 | Retired PepsiCo executive; he died in 2025, before Ladd. |
Dates and biographical details are reported in the Associated Press, The Guardian, and The Washington Post obituaries. The available accounts do not establish a month for Hunter’s death consistently, so the year is the clearest supported detail.
Bruce Dern: her first husband
Ladd met actor Bruce Dern while they were performing opposite one another in a 1959 production of Tennessee Williams’s Orpheus Descending. They married the following year and divorced in 1969, according to The Guardian.
The couple had two daughters, Diane Elizabeth and Laura. Diane Elizabeth died at 18 months; Laura became an actor. An Associated Press obituary recounts Ladd’s 1992 statement that the loss of their first daughter contributed to the end of the marriage. That is Ladd’s reported recollection, not an independently established single explanation for the divorce. The Associated Press and Deseret News report the family history and her account.
