Spoilers for all eight seasons of Dexter. You only need the essentials: Dexter Morgan is a Miami Metro blood-spatter analyst who secretly kills people he believes have escaped justice. His adoptive father, Harry, taught him to channel those urges through a code. Dexter: Original Sin goes back to 1991, when Dexter is beginning his forensic internship and Harry is shaping the rules that will define his double life.
What is Dexter’s double life?
Across its eight seasons and 96 episodes, the original Dexter follows Dexter Morgan’s two identities: respected blood-spatter analyst at Miami Metro and secret killer of people he believes have escaped justice. Paramount+ describes him as “The blood-spatter analyst who moonlights as a vigilante serial killer.” (Paramount+, September 18, 2026)

Dexter calls the urges that drive him his “dark passenger.” Harry’s Code is the set of rules meant to direct those urges toward targets Dexter believes deserve to die, while helping him avoid detection. That arrangement is the series’ central tension: Dexter works alongside law enforcement by day, but his secret life puts his colleagues and the people closest to him at risk.
How does Harry shape Dexter?
Harry Morgan is both Dexter’s adoptive father and the person who teaches him how to live with his violent impulses. The code is not simply a license to kill; it is Harry’s attempt to channel Dexter’s urges and keep them controlled. Original Sin returns to the formative period when that guidance is taking shape.

In the prequel, Dexter is a student who starts a forensics internship at Miami Metro. As his urges become harder to ignore, Harry guides him toward a life of killing people who deserve it while avoiding law enforcement. Paramount Global Content describes the series as following Dexter “as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer.” (Paramount Global Content)
Why is Debra so important to Dexter?
Debra Morgan is Dexter’s sister, a Miami police detective, and the person to whom he is most closely connected. Near the end of the original series, she discovers that Dexter is a killer. Her relationship with him can no longer be separated from the crimes he has committed: she has to face both the truth about her brother and her own involvement in his secret life. That discovery makes the series’ double life personal. Dexter’s code may be meant to limit the harm he causes, but it cannot keep his family untouched by his choices.

What happened to Rita and Harrison?
Dexter’s attempt to build an ordinary family life ends in tragedy. The Trinity Killer, Arthur Mitchell, kills Dexter’s wife, Rita. Their infant son, Harrison, is found amid the aftermath—a devastating echo of the childhood trauma that shaped Dexter. Harrison’s early life is therefore tied to the violence Dexter has tried to keep hidden from his family. (Associated Press report carried by CBS News)
How does the original Dexter finale end?
In the final season, Dexter plans to leave Miami with Hannah McKay and Harrison while Oliver Saxon, the Brain Surgeon, remains a threat. Saxon shoots Debra as she tries to arrest him. Her injury leaves her in a coma with no hope of recovery. Dexter kills Saxon, turns off Debra’s respirator, takes her body from the hospital, and buries her at sea. Dexter then takes his boat into a hurricane, making it appear that he died. The final image reveals him alive and alone in the Northwest, working as a lumberjack. This is self-imposed exile, not a confirmed death. Hannah and Harrison have already gone to Buenos Aires.

Where does Original Sin fit in the story?
Original Sin is a prequel, not the next chapter after Dexter’s apparent death. It is set in 1991 Miami, long before the original series’ events. Its story follows young Dexter’s first steps from student and forensic intern toward the killer shaped by Harry’s code. The first season has ten episodes; Paramount Global Content lists a December 13, 2024 premiere. (Paramount Global Content)
Patrick Gibson plays young Dexter, Christian Slater plays Harry, and Molly Brown plays Debra. Michael C. Hall supplies Dexter’s inner voice. The setup revisits how Dexter learned to function inside Miami Metro and how Harry’s rules came to govern the secret life viewers already know.

For the story’s chronology, Original Sin comes first because it is set in 1991. For the viewing order that audiences originally experienced, watch the 2006–2013 Dexter series first, then the prequel. The original show establishes what Dexter’s code, relationships, and eventual isolation mean; the prequel goes back to their beginnings.
Paramount+’s September 18, 2026 retrospective lists the original Dexter and New Blood on any Paramount+ plan, while Original Sin and Resurrection require Premium. Availability can vary by region and change, so check the service’s current listing in your country. (Paramount+)
