Netflix’s Devil May Cry is a Capcom adaptation created by Adi Shankar, the showrunner behind Netflix’s Castlevania. The claim that it is “even better than the games” is a critical verdict, not an established fact—and it depends on what a viewer wants from the franchise. A series can give Dante room for characterization and sustained dramatic pacing; it cannot reproduce the player’s role in the games’ combat. This review considers the adaptation on those different terms and covers the series through its second season.
What the Netflix series adapts
Netflix identifies the show as an animated adaptation of Capcom’s Devil May Cry game franchise, created by Hideki Kamiya. It is not an unrelated demon-hunting story with the franchise name attached. The premise centers on Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, and a threat to the boundary between the human and demon worlds. The first season begins with a Vatican City museum heist that pulls him into a scheme to open a rift between those realms. Netflix’s Media Center and official series page establish that premise, but do not map the show one-to-one onto a specific numbered game. It is more accurate to call it a franchise adaptation than a direct retelling of a particular installment.
Does the series outdo the games?
That depends on which strengths matter. The games put the audience in control of Dante’s combat; the series makes viewers observers, trading interactivity for authored scenes, character beats, and a fixed dramatic rhythm. Those are different experiences, so “better” is not a neutral measurement. The fairest comparison names the games being considered and asks what each medium does well.
Characterization and story
Television can sustain conversations and dramatic turns without asking the player to return immediately to combat. That makes character writing a useful test of the adaptation: does Dante’s personality carry through, and do relationships and conflicts gain shape on screen? The series’ second-season conflict with Dante’s estranged twin brother Vergil gives the show a central personal relationship to develop. Whether that writing surpasses the games is a judgment viewers should make against the specific game stories they know, not a conclusion supported by Netflix’s promotional description.

Action and spectacle
In the games, a fight is something the player performs; in the series, it is staged and edited for the viewer. Animation can choreograph a clear visual sequence, but it cannot offer the same satisfaction as executing a combination yourself. The comparison should therefore be about how effectively the show’s fights work as scenes, not whether they duplicate gameplay. Netflix credits Studio Mir as the animation studio; that production credit alone does not establish a quality verdict.
Tone, pacing, and accessibility
The show has to arrange humor, violence, and plot across episodes rather than around playable missions. Viewers can judge whether that rhythm creates momentum or interrupts it, and whether Dante’s appeal survives the move from player-controlled protagonist to character on screen. Netflix classifies the US listing as adult animation, fantasy, and horror, with a TV-MA rating. For newcomers, the practical question is whether the premise and character stakes make sense without prior game knowledge; the official synopsis alone cannot settle that viewing experience.

Who made the series—and how it relates to Castlevania
Adi Shankar is the creator of Devil May Cry, and Netflix Tudum identifies him as its showrunner. Netflix lists Studio Mir as the animation studio. The starring cast includes Johnny Yong Bosch, Scout Taylor-Compton, and Kevin Conroy; Tudum identifies Bosch as Dante, Robbie Daymond as Vergil, Taylor-Compton as Lady, and Hoon Lee as White Rabbit. Shankar’s involvement gives the comparison with Castlevania a clear basis, but the available official credits do not show that the two series share every writer, animator, or member of the production team. Shankar described his ambition as making “one of the best shows on the Netflix platform”—a statement of intent, not proof of the result. How many seasons are on Netflix?
As of October 7, 2026, Netflix lists two seasons, and a June 4, 2026 Tudum update says the series has been renewed for a third and final season. That status may change; the Netflix title page is the place to check current availability. This review’s scope is seasons one and two, not an assessment of the unreleased final season.

Verdict
Devil May Cry is best judged as a screen adaptation with its own strengths and limits, rather than as a substitute for playing the games. Its creator, franchise basis, premise, and current season status are documented by Netflix; the claim that it surpasses the games needs specific examples from the series and the games under comparison. If the argument is that its character drama and episode-by-episode storytelling make a more satisfying experience for a particular viewer, say why. If what makes Devil May Cry compelling is controlling Dante in combat, television cannot replace that.
