The available evidence documents disappointment among some fans around the 2020 Supernatural finale; it does not establish that Destiel works or activity later declined, or that AO3 as a whole entered a new era.
Why the 2020 finale became a flashpoint for Destiel fans
Destiel is the pairing of Dean Winchester and Castiel in Supernatural. The show’s 2020 finale matters to arguments about the ship because a 2021 academic discussion describes fans who expected Castiel to return and a Destiel romance, and records that some were bitterly disappointed by the outcome. The account also discusses fan interpretations and online actions after the finale. Monstrum’s 2021 discussion of the finale and its reception supports treating that period as a point of contention.
That evidence is about reactions, not a unanimous fandom response. It also does not measure what fans subsequently created or read on AO3. An emotionally significant event can shape a ship’s cultural meaning without proving that the ship’s archive activity has fallen.
What “Destiel’s downfall” does—and does not—establish
The phrase appears in a May 15, 2026 commentary article that argues Destiel’s decline signals a broader shift in AO3 fandom. That article offers an interpretation, but the surfaced text does not provide a transparent, reproducible dataset of Destiel work counts, rankings, or activity. Its argument is therefore not a measurement of a current decline. The commentary making the “end of an era” claim is evidence that the interpretation is being made, not independent proof that the trend exists.

These are three separate questions:
- Canon: What happened in the television series, and how did it affect expectations?
- Fandom response: How did some fans interpret and respond to the finale?
- AO3 activity: Did the volume or relative prominence of Destiel works change over time?
The first two can provide context for the third, but they cannot answer it on their own. A finale-era dispute does not establish a long-term change in archive output, and one ship’s trajectory—if measured—would not by itself demonstrate an archive-wide historical transition.

A credible before-and-after claim needs comparable observations, not an impression drawn from a prominent episode or a single snapshot. At minimum, a published analysis would need to specify:

- Dated archive snapshots: records from clearly stated dates, so readers can see which periods are being compared.
- Consistent counting rules: how works tagged for Dean/Castiel are identified and whether duplicate, cross-tagged, or otherwise included works are handled consistently.
- More than a lifetime total: total works can accumulate even when new work creation slows. New works per defined period and other clearly defined activity measures would help show what is changing.
- A stated ranking method: if the claim is about Destiel’s relative standing, the analysis should explain what is ranked, which tags or categories are compared, and when the rankings were captured.
- A clear scope for “end of an era”: an archive-wide claim would require evidence about AO3 more broadly, not just a single pairing.
Without those elements, “downfall” and “end of an era” remain cultural interpretations rather than verified descriptions of AO3’s measured trajectory. The available evidence makes the finale a meaningful part of Destiel’s story, but does not show whether its later archive activity rose, fell, or held steady.
