Derrick Harmon’s mother, Tiffany Saine, died shortly after he was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Harmon was the 21st overall pick on April 24, 2025. Saine was on life support in a Detroit hospital, and Harmon said he planned to go there after speaking with reporters to tell her he had been drafted.
What happened after Derrick Harmon was drafted?
After the Steelers selected him, Harmon spoke with reporters and said his mother was on life support. He told them he would head straight to the hospital after the media call to share the news with her.
“That was a little bittersweet because she worked as hard just as me to get to this moment,” Harmon said during the media call, as reproduced by Yahoo Sports. He added: “After I get off the phone with you guys, I’m going to head straight to the hospital and tell her that her son got drafted.”
Contemporaneous reports said Harmon visited Saine and told her about his selection, and that she died shortly afterward. Those accounts do not establish exactly how much time passed between the visit and her death. Field Level Media and CBS Sports reported the sequence on April 26, 2025.
