His career spanned two very different chapters: the 1964 hit “Go Now!” and a decade in Wings, where he sang, played instruments and co-wrote “Mull of Kintyre.”
Who was Denny Laine?
Laine was born Brian Frederick Hines in Birmingham, England, in 1944. He adopted the name Denny Laine as a performer and became known first as a founding member and lead singer of the Moody Blues, then as a core member of Wings.
Those roles are not interchangeable: Laine’s Moody Blues tenure belonged to the group’s early pop and R&B period, while his work with Wings involved a broader mix of vocals, instruments and songwriting alongside the McCartneys.
What did Denny Laine do in the Moody Blues?
Laine formed the Moody Blues in 1964 with Ray Thomas, Mike Pinder, Graeme Edge and Clint Warwick. He sang lead on “Go Now!,” which reached No. 1 in the UK in late 1964. He left the group in 1966.

How did Laine contribute to Wings?
Laine joined Paul and Linda McCartney in 1971 to form Wings. The band’s run lasted through 1981, and Laine remained a central member throughout. McCartney’s official Wings history describes seven studio albums released by the group.

His work extended beyond performing: Laine contributed vocals and instrumental parts, and co-wrote songs with McCartney. One especially prominent example is “Mull of Kintyre.” The Guardian reported that the single became the first British single to sell 2 million copies; that figure refers to sales in Britain, not worldwide sales.
Laine also contributed to the album Band on the Run and continued recording with McCartney after Wings. The band’s identity was built around reinvention and collaboration, as well as family. In an Associated Press feature about a 2026 Wings exhibit, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame senior director of museum and archival collections Andy Leach said: “What’s interesting about Wings is that they were formed around the idea of reinvention, renewal, risk-taking, experimentation, but collaboration. And family was at the center of it, too.”

How were Laine’s Moody Blues and Wings roles different?
| Band and period | Laine’s role | Representative song |
|---|---|---|
| Moody Blues, 1964–1966 | Early lead vocalist and guitarist | “Go Now!” |
| Wings, 1971–1981 | Long-running multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and co-writer | “Mull of Kintyre” |
The comparison helps explain why Laine should not be remembered only as a McCartney sideman: he had a major hit as a lead singer before Wings existed, then brought his own musicianship and songwriting to the later band.
